We have a fighting chance against Alabama tomorrow but here are some of the keys to making it happen:
1) Confidence: The players have to show up confident in their abilities and those of their teammates. A timid team (like we saw in the Clemson game) will struggle. Be confident and ball out.
2) Discipline: Avoid penalties like the plague. For way too long, we have extended drives and lost games due to stupid, selfish & undisciplined penalties. You can get away with that if you're the 2001 Canes (greatest of all time) but this team cannot afford ANY stupid or selfish penalties. Put your teammates, your coaches and your school first and don't take any bait. Show extreme discipline and restraint to avoid drive-killing or drive-extending plays. Each Captain needs to be vocal and calm his group down if this becomes a problem. Severe discipline will win out. Don't shoot yourself in the foot.
3) Stack the Box: Stop the run. We have quality DBs. Let them battle in man coverage. Stack the box & stop the run.
4) Sure Tackling: wrap up with good form tackling. Don't just stick a shoulder in. Gang tackle like we used to do in the good old days. If you can't bring someone down solo due to a bad angle or another reason, hold on for dear life until your teammates show up.
5) LBs: Avoid blocks or fight like heck to shed blocks and make a play. Be physical & fast. Don't let their run game get momentum.
6) Don't waste a single down (Part 1): Lashlee needs to call a great game. Please no 3 & outs running up the gut three times in a row. Be more creative and simply distribute the ball to your playmakers in space (with some quality shots downfield mixed in). Please please no Cam Harris up the gut three times in a row. We've got to mix it up and take some shots downfield to loosen them up too.
7) Don't waste a single down (Part 2): Do not throw a single pass to an unrealiable WR or TE. Not one. Any unreliable WR should not play at all in this game. Don't waste a single down. There's very little margin for error.
8) Play to Win: Don't play to keep it close or avoid losing badly. That would not end up well. Play to win.
9) Play Your Best Players: Forget seniority. Play to win and play all the best weapons available to you (like a Leonard Taylor). The Win is what matters the most.
10) Blitz and keep their young QB off-balance: Their young QB will make mistakes, if he is pressured frequently. Dial up pressure in the right spots and hit their QB hard (but legally).
11) Play Starters on Special Teams: Have quality players on special teams.
12) Punt directionally if Returns Are a Concern: Even if we lose 5 yards per punt on average, punt directionally and eliminate the potential for big returns.
13) Pretend the crowd is cheering for you: Assume everyone in the crowd is rooting for you (not against you). Be empowered by the knowledge that Miami's massive global fan base is supporting you from all corners of the globe.
14) Play physical WRs only: Have them block like heck downfield.
Beat Bama tomorrow and get Miami back where we belong! Go Canes!
