I'm sure others know this better and in more detail than I, but we've seen guys like Leach and Kelly that maximize extent schemes by simplifying teaching and communication of these concepts to maximize their implementation. We've likewise seen guys like Meyer, Riley, Heupul, & Day seemingly lean into hybridization of concepts and collaborative mindset to create institutional flexibility. All of these guys are managing their organization and running their process at a level that is far beyond what they learned from. The NFL has seemingly caught up to and synthesized all of this into the new "Pro Style". Yes new schemes are a thing and coaches have leanings/personalities that matter, but in the NFL its all about adaptability while still being able to hit the leagues narrow margins. In the NFL, you must be good up and down the chain, but in college you have more choices to min/max a strategy.

Lashlee had his faults, but many of them were choices. He leaned on simplicity every where, but he was clearly doing it to more frequently achieve mastery. He's not Leach or Mumme, but he knows at the core its about getting the concepts through to the kids even if you know at some level theres more there your not drawing from. If you've ever seen Leach run a QB film session, its simultaneously simple, socratic, engaging, and effective. The key there was making sure the talent around them helped to raise the ceiling.

One of my concerns with Gattis is that Harbaugh seemed to be running a collaborative, pro style process with lots of input from which he can make a decision. That can work if you're getting honest, experienced input on what each unit is good at and can absorb; it also can fall flat rhyming with Bro Styles of yester-year. Gattis didn't seem to gel with that Harbaugh's staff, although as we all know from the "Where the F*** is Dan" articles, his Alabama time also seemed to run that kind of process.

So how is Gattis doing things? Do we have any insight? This isn't an area where detail is ever plentiful, but we've all seen the issues with tempo and checks in games for starters. Is he a James Coley-esque scripter that falls off the tracks 10 - 15 plays in? Are Ponce / Staff giving him options to select? Is he using the "Ask Madden" button on a PS3 and copy of NCAA14? Do we think Cristobal/Mirabel or Ponce have a significant influence on strategy as far as what is getting installed?
