How did you become a Hurricanes fan?

A guy named Howard Schnellenberger led the team to victories over (ranked) Florida, (#1) Pedo State, (ranked) F$U, and Notre Dame, all in the same season. And I noticed the small newspaper articles in the Orlando Sentinel.

It's not often that Miami gets to beat Florida, F$U, and Notre Dame in the same season. 1981 was a very good year, even with a bowl ban.

I grew up in Nebraska and although really young at the time, have a few Canes vs Husker memories but when I truly started following Miami over the Huskers was when I started watching a walk-on track athlete playing football by the name of Santana Moss!!! Fell in love with his swag, his big play abilities and his facemask / Orange Miami netted uniforms! From him, it was then Sean T, Hester, Roscoe Parrish and I've followed the Canes since. Got made fun of majorly / called a traitor all the time growing up but I never cared :-)

But you lived in Gator Country then, no? Is that what made you decide you wanted to go to school at UM?

Grew up with Jack Hardings Canes football coach family and PaPa Nick Chickillo family .

We lived and breathed football 24-7 it was an absolute amazing childhood I experienced.

Playing catch with Jim Kelly in Chickillo’s back yard, imagine the pick up games OMG it was a who’s who amazing times .

Steve Alvers so many names my mind gets clogged trying to remember .

Dad took me to my first game August 31, 2002 Miami vs FAMU. I was 11, and seeing all the fans and hype surrounding the team was amazing. The OB was rocking and the team was flying all over the field. I've been a fan ever since then.

And I should give my story some more detail. In 1979, while I was in the womb in Sunrise, Florida, my father began telling me the lore of the undefeated 1972 Dolphins. After I was born, I was so blessed as to be held in the arms of one Larry Csonka, he held me up to the sun, and my love for the sport of football was complete. (True story, minus the holding me up to the sun part. I have no idea if he did that.)

When I was young, my father worked nights and my mother worked days, so I obviously spent more time with my dad. We watched lots of sports - football, baseball, basketball, golf, NASCAR, pretty much everything except hockey. As I was growing up, the Canes were doing their thing, and my dad got me into them too. When it came time to go to college, I applied to UM early decision and that was it.

We were kickin a s s and takin names in the 80's.

And dancin while doing that.

Somebody screwed up and signed my admission form. No chance they should have let a bumpkin like me into Miami. Figured they signed all the smart folks and then realized they needed at least one idiot….Presto….ME
