How Did the CFB World Miss it This Bad?

This sums it up. Back in January, like many of you, I said that GT would beat FSU in Dublin. Like many of you, I was also surprised how much the CFB world was talking up FSU going into 2024.

This was a team that lost:

-Its star QB
-Its star RB
-Its star WRs
-Its star TE
-Its star DE and DT

And multiple other starters on the defense. This was a team that looked completely different when Jordan Travis went down. Even with Travis, it had skated by clearly inferior teams and had major luck on its side. This is also a team that got annihilated by Georgia, which exposed that its level of HS recruiting was mediocre at best. Yet the CFB world still regarded this 2024 FSU team as a preseason ACC champion pick and Top 10 team.

There’s a lot of season left, and there’s time to turn things around, but this is an at best 8-4 FSU team. They’ve got a tougher schedule than anticipated. They will be underdogs against Clemson, ND, and Miami. They have touch matchups at SMU and Memphis. They also have some decent matchups against BC and UNC.

Finally, like many of you on this board have said, you can’t live or die by the portal. At some point mediocre HS recruiting is gonna catch up. Finally, it looks like FSU’s bill is due.

The only thing in all of this that is confusing is how the CFB world so blatantly ignored what was in front of them. A team that downgraded at every position is, in fact, going to be far worse this year compared last year. The only way 7-5/8-4 gets worse for FSU is if Miami and MC finally break through and have a huge Year 3. TBD, the opportunity is there and must be taken.

Yes... finally someone said it.
That tweet is 100% spot on.

How could they NOT struggle this season?

FSU replaced a ton of proven talent with guys that haven’t done anything since having 4 or 5 stars next to their name in high school years ago. It was blatantly apparent to anyone that paid attention that they would have a drop off this year, but if you pointed it out as a Miami fan you were being a hater, and if you pointed it out as a neutral you were told that Norvell has earned the benefit of the doubt (for whatever reason)

I think you can rely on the portal for instant success with guys like Coleman, Wilson, Fiske etc., and I think you can also use it for long term development plays like Travis, and potentially Marvin Jones types. But when you take a bunch of guys with multiple years left that haven’t actually proven anything yet, I think it’s absurd to expect the instant success part.

If you’re going to use the portal to get players on your team, at least get players who have really good film. Whether it’s to get a second stringer or star player you have to have some film at your level to make an evaluation.
Getting a player from The Portal just because he was highly rated in high school doesn’t really mean anything.
It just means you didn’t pay as much for a blue chip high school player.

Bethune, Verse and Fisk had legit film for example.

Last night I talked with 2 Fsu fans and about 4or 5 Florida fans while I was bartending. Florida fans were pretty consistent and agreed that they think there in for a tough game against us.

The Fsu dudes were thinking they are in for a good year. I brought up all the players lost and said how can you think you can loose that kind of talent and not take a step back. Well I guess I was right. I bet them 2 dudes are like fck that bartender. lol.

This struck me too. Verse was a legit star at Albany. Coleman was very good at MSU. But they guys they brought in didn’t do anything at their prior stops. It’s just mind boggling the CFB world gave them such a benefit of the doubt. Norvell has shown he’s a good coach, but he’s nowhere near elite.

Marvin Jones was out there looking like a created player, like J Clooney at SC east and played like Jane all game! FSU’s linebackers were also none existent 🤦🏾‍♂️

I think fans and the media gave Norvell the benefit of the doubt that he was a master of the transfer portal. The 247 rankings on their incoming transfers are way high, and based more off potential than current talent level from what it seems.

Problem is, now there’s more competition that prices fsu out of the portal, and they banked their chances on way too many “what ifs” with potential this offseason and not proven portal players that excelled at their last school. I think Miami did in the transfer portal what fsu accomplished the previous season, and this season will show that.
