Honoring the 1989 National Championship Team

Go watch the Cotton Bowl game vs a Top 3 Texas team...and then go back and show me a more dominating performance from the 89 team...who were handled by FSU...and Bama had them on the ropes in NC game...

You're cherry picking games. Besides, we killed them and it wasn't b/c our DL but i digress. And you're moving the goalposts. We're talking about most talented DL here at UM. 1989 is #1 in my book. 2001 is up there as well/.

another flake James, jenn Knarley special, wait til a noon GT game to do this

Not sure if this is the dumbest thing I've read this week, but it's pretty close.

Do you realize that in order to honor the 1989 team, you have to actually invite players from the 1989 team to show up? And that you kind of have to do that in advance? You can't wait until ESPN decides game times to honor 100 people who live all over the world.

2001 DL has no business being in the Top 3 in UM History...86...87...88...89..91...94 all were better than 01s DL

Just a side note.....the 1990 team was playing Texas in the Cotton Bowl because they managed to lose two games, giving up 28 and 29 points in those losses. So let's save the "greatest" talk for the teams that closed the deal.

From a talent perspective, nah, they're up there.

McDougle's 2001 season is arguably the best season for any DE in history (he had over 50 QBHs, IIRC). On that line were AWilliams (4th round, iirc), Joseph (1st), Walters and Vince (1st) was a backup. Green and Green were servieable and if you;'re bringing up Hamlet, I sure as **** am bringing up Green! :)

The 94 DL when healthy were a F-ing nightmare and better than 01s DL....

In all my yrs of watching UM FB...The 91 teams Defense was on another Level...Entire Defense was 100% Savages...Top too Bottom....I'll take a Lubick Defense over any DCs Defense in the last 35yrs of CFB....And give absolutely No Fs what kind of Offense it had to face...
He played it too soft against BYU to open '90 season. Probably should have blitzed more.

Glad to see Wesley Carroll getting some shine. Hes overshadowed by guys like Andre, Playmaker, Reggie, etc., but he was in his day, a seriously dangerous wide reciever.

Sad s*** where we have to dig up 20+ year old Cane teams to venerate and get excited.
If it was not reality I would not believe it.
Where did our Canes go to be where they are now.?... Mediocrity sucks.
Hopefully we can soon start building memories again...

The 89 team had some weaknesses that were all but gone by 90/91....I still say the 91 team would've gave 01 all they could handle..and then some...Lubicks Defense was many yrs before its time....If ya think Ohio Sts 2002 DL gave Dorsey fits...the 91 DL would've had him in serious trouble...
#98 Rusty Medaris maybe the best DE I have ever seen ,what a terrible sham his knee injury cut short a Great career

It's not uncommon to recognize a championship team in their 30th anniversary year. Not EVERYTHING has to be an indictment of the program.

I sware when David Klingler played us in the Orange Bowl it was so loud the players were on the sidelines yelling OB OB ........The second loudest was at the West end Jaworski of the Eagles on a Monday night had to pull away from center 5 times and the refs threatened to call a penalty on the crowd.

Just as long as the crowd doesn't get flagged for targeting and ejected.

The thing I remember about that Sugar Bowl vs. Alabama is that Doyle Brunson the famed poker player walked into our sportsbook office at the Horseshoe as soon as the bowl lines went up weeks earlier and bet $55,000 apiece on 16 games. Rapid fire. He knew exactly what teams he wanted. As soon as we quoted the number he fired away.

Doyle ended up with some good numbers and some bad numbers. One bad number he got stuck with was Miami -8.5. It went down to -8 all over the place and also was available -7.5

Brunson was basically breaking even on his wagers prior to New Year's Day. Then the Canes game turned out to be pivotal for our bottom line that day and for the bowl season in general. The sportsbook manager Nick Bogdanovich was a really good guy. He is still a bigshot in the industry. But at that time he was very young and worried about his job.

Nobody sweated for the house like Nick Bogdanovich. Every night. Game after game. He would kick the filing cabinet with his hard shoes when a decision went against us. That's why I always get a howl when people try to claim the sportsbooks don't care who wins. You've got to be a rank idiot to believe that. The casino owners are accustomed to grinding a profit throughout the property. The sportsbooks especially in that era were huge footprints in terms of square footage. If you've got an underperforming area of that size they aren't going to care about details or excuses. The top guy gets fired. Sportsbooks are much more prone to short term losses than slots or tables or virtually anything else.

Nick was nervous and pacing all day but was resigned to a poor outcome. Then one game went our way. I think it was USC in the Rose Bowl. That enabled wiggle room to escape if somehow Alabama covered the +8.5 against the Canes. Late in the game it seemed Miami was on the way to a comfortable cover. But as soon as Alabama was driving and had potential to sneak inside the 8.5 via a touchdown and 2 point conversion, Nick was literally leaning on my shoulder and incredibly emotional. I remember his words: "If we can somehow pull this out I swear I'll never complain about another result as long as any of us are here."

Who was he kidding? It wouldn't last 24 hours. But I appreciated it because that outcome was very pivotal toward how Nick would be viewed by Jack Binion, who didn't want to lose to Doyle Brunson.

There were a series of lucky plays for Alabama. Then the critical 2 point conversion. Nick went berserk when that succeeded. But now I'm sweating out the Canes holding on for the national championship. I think we broke a long run to seal it.

Game basically fell on the worst number for the sportsbooks at 8...33 to 25.

It should have been impossible to lose on either side of that game. But Doyle Brunson found a way with the quick trigger -8.5
