I think you're making it more than what it is.
Let's assume--because again, we don't know--that Alonzo's role is that of a general manager of sorts. Let's assume he is heavily involved in scouting. He implements culture. He is there day in, day out and meets regularly with HC concerning players, transfer market, scout, scheme, personnel, etc. If he (or anyone in that position) reports to the AD, why would that threaten an AD? An AD isn't capable to do those things, nor does an AD have the time to be around the football team 24/7. If there is a very clear job description put in place that the "GM" (Alonzo) reports to the AD, I don't see why that would be a problem. Quite frankly, if I'm the AD, I'd be excited with bringing a pro structure to college and maybe starting a new trend.
I think where there may be conflict is between GM and HC, which we see all the time in pro sports. That to me is far, far more of an issue than between GM and AD.
