Hetherman vs Malzahn

FSU also is going to try some long throws with their supposed big WRs

I like Bain and Mesidor to kill inside and basic stretch runs and to flush Castellanos. On that latter point, closing will be key. This is where Marquise Lightfoot, Keionte Scott, and JaKobe Thomas will make their presence felt. Elite closing speed and repeated violent contact.

Duce will likely be open a fair amount of the game. The trick will be to make sure Tommy is prone or out of bounds before Duce's routes have time to develop.

I wonder if Pickett will play more? Fast edge as well

Not the game for him or Pruitt. They are the future. Pickett needs 20-30lbs in the worst way. Kid has elite rushing skills and appears to have skills to play off the ball. At worst, Lightfoot may keep adding to get to some hand in the ground work by next year leaving Pickett as the best speed/edge in the other side.

Pruitt will be the Thomas replacement IMO

This will be Lightfoot's breakout game.
Was thinking the exact same thing. He needs to set the edge and force rhe QB inside. Whoever the spy is will be lighting him up. Castellanos better be practicing his slides or he will be the next QB that Heatherman’s defense knocks out.

They will get some rushing yards this game - they will be rushing it 40+ times.

Eye discipline will be key - all the motion, OL pulling opposite way the ball goes etc.

We need to tackle well and fly to the ball.

Be careful of the tricks - I guarantee they will pull everything out this game.

Get them into 3rd and 6+ by getting some TFL's and sacks.

It will be interesting how they line up vs Duce. They will be throwing deep shots/back shoulders to him for sure.

First down will be key. They’ll win some downs but when they get behind the sticks especially 3rd and 6+ I suspect we’ll dedicate 5 people to the quarterback (single man blitzes or spy) and cage him. Then play a lot of 3 or 4 under zones behind it so we have eyes. Castellanos against uva panicked vs a rush and we have an aggressive upfield front. I think he’ll have a tough time with that if we don’t give him outlet lanes.
I do think our DL uses a bull rush more often than not, which fits more into that line of thinking. Force him to move side to side. String the plays out. I’d line Bain and Mesidor up next each other and just collapse the pocket at will.

Interested to see the chess match this weekend. Hetherman has done well against scrambling QB's and our defense looks good, but Malzahn is a good play caller and FSU has speed which I think can be trouble for any team

Hetherman mentioned in his press conference that he's never gone against malzahn but he went against a similar offense last year - he's referring to the UNC game where he went up against Chip Lindsey who is a Malzahn disciple at both Auburn and UCF

UNC won 19-17 (Minnesota missed a FG as time expired to lose). UNC had 252 total yards, 147 rushing and 105 passing.

Things of note, UNC had Omarion Hampton (RB for the LA Chargers), and UNC lost their QB to a broken leg in the game

anyone smarter than me with deep analysis on hetherman and/or how we might fare against this offense?

This was what I was looking for.

This is my biggest fear. Beck pressing and short fields for Noles
I hear you and your concerns. But,.. of all the guys on the field, Carson is the last one I would expect to be pressing. His resume speaks for itself. And , give him time in a clean pocket and he will pick these cucks apart. He’s been in more big pressure situations, games and stadiums than just about anyone, including some of the coaches. In Beck we trust. Go Canes🙌🏽

I’d watch the MN game vs Penn State. I understand PSU isn’t an offensive juggernaut. But MN held them to their third lowest offensive output in the regular season. Held them to 117 yards rushing, on 33 carries. 31 of which came on one play.

They kept Allan in check running all game. And realistically should’ve won that game, MN just doesn’t have the players to win a war of attrition game against a team like PSU.

His bread and butter is stopping the run. MN had a phenomenal run defense last season, outside of the Iowa game. The difference is MN doesn’t have the quality of talent that we do. But they flew to the ball. It’s unreal how good they were gang tackling last season, Minnesota that is.

They will stretch plays out. Forcing teams to play laterally and then wait for the help to arrive. Which we’ve all seen so far this year with us. As long as we don’t lose our fits, and keep them moving east to west, we can slow their attack down.
all games are relevant but Penn State doesn't run anything like malzahn

Minnesota vs UNC isn't comparable in terms of the talent hetherman has or is facing but it's the closest schematically we'll see

for what it's worth, I think our defense will play well Saturday...

but for every Minnesota vs Penn State there's a Minnesota vs Iowa where Kaleb johnson (Pittsburgh steeler now) rushed for 206 yards and Iowa had 272 rushing yards https://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup/_/gameId/401628487

Why will Duce likely be open for a fair amount of the game? Do our DBs all of a sudden suck? I didn’t realize he was at J Smiths level.

Maybe I'm overstating things. I guess my point is that Duce could even win the majority of his reps and it wouldn't matter with a good pass-rush. Mobile quarterbacks can reduce the efficacy of a solid pass-rush, but they don't "negate" it. Listening to FSU chatter this week has been an exercise in patience.

Anyways, maybe Lucas and Frederique do their job and lock down Duce.

I think we actually match up well against him. Hes a good receiver but I think it was a combo of UVA not exactly being solid at DB combined with his abilities.

I hope to see our edge rush force him to make throws to the middle of the field. His lack of height creates issues with throwing lanes and could limit his vision to spot DBs. I haven’t seen his pass chart but I’d imagine a large majority of his efficieny and stats have come from sideline routes. Take that away, make him throw off rhythm and force him to use the middle of the field.

I agree. It was more stating he can make a defense that can defend mobile QBs. The reason I wasn’t focusing too much on UNC, Max Johnson’s didn’t really offer much of a rushing threat.

I don’t put a ton of stock in the Iowa game in terms of this weekend’s matchup. FSU doesn’t have the doziers that Iowa does. But if you look at their defense last year, the Iowa game is a major blip. Most games they defended the run extremely well.

Regardless, I think he coaches sound defense. By and large MN had a good defense last year. They weren’t really gashed too often by mobile QBs.

He’s not easy to guard in those jump ball, back shoulder passes. But if their offense has to move based on that, that’s a win for us.

Based on the first few games FSU's played, those big shot deep balls come with Tommy hanging on for dear life-- even against mid and low-tier NCAA programs. I expect that if Castellanos wants to hang in there and deliver shots he's going to take a few of them himself.

I think Brown gets more reps vs Duce. He is more physical, has shown to be more aggressive with his hands, only bust was in zone with a shallow crosser he let run past him before reacting late.

Lucas will get reps and better be ready to turn his head for ints. Brown may not get the ints but those back shoulders aren’t give mes with him imo.
