As another season of CFB comes to a close, I always find it fascinating to look at how conquering heros arrived vs how they leave.

Expectations are unreasonable and patience is in short supply.

If we hire X, fold the program!

We need to hire Y because he is an elite innovator/recruiter/savage/god/pick a superlative.

So far not many, ok any, of the "must get hires" have delivered. And by that I mean knocking Saban off his perch.

You forgot to throw in "Elite"

A lot of people think there is some magic formula out there.

We grossly underachieved under Richt but this season proved yet again you must have OVERWHELMING talent and vastly superior play at QB or you're just another 8, 9 or if you're lucky and get a few bounces maybe 10 win team.

There isn't a huge difference between team #10 and team #30-35 anymore.

I think fans underestimate how hard it is to get to the top. We've got what we need to be a 2-3 loss team every year, but it takes 10x more to get from there to a NC. It's easy (ish) to get top 15 classes and top 15 coaches and spend top 15 money. But it's real hard to do top 5, and that's where you need to be is you want to be in the hunt every year. Not in the hunt because you lucked into a generational QB, but just re-loading every year like a few teams do. Watch osu now, I'd be shocked if they didn't become a very good team instead of one of the best. Look at how fsu is playing even though they had all those top 5 classes. It's really hard to put it all together at the level fans expect.

It's mostly myth, but mixed with a theoretical reality.

In theory, if you can get a truly great coach, he can take your program to the top and be in annual contention to win championships. (Saban, Belichick).

But this is unrealistic because coaches like that usually only come around once in a generation, which is why most hires end in disappointment.

Huge difference between good and great.

Tom Herman seems to be trending in the right direction. He was a guy I really wanted last time but it wasn't looking too promising for him.

I can't believe Texas did not have one play over 50 yards this season.

Miami hasn’t gotten any of those must-have guys. Kul was the only coach that had a reputation like that, and he had Just been fired.

They don’t need explosive plays bo

So did Richt, then he wasn't. Same with Kirby...he better win the SEC and/or a NC soon or the fans will turn on him. Harbaugh has improved Michigan a great deal, but he keeps losing the big games, and they won't love him much longer. The days of going on for a decade without reaching the top are over.

This is literally the case for every single sports team at every single level ever since the dawn of competitive sports. Every fan base get excited for a new hire.

The most popular people on any football team are always the coach who hasn't coached a game yet and the backup quarterback who hasn't thrown a pass yet.

Harbaugh has been a monumental bust. He’s about the douchiest dude on earth, so couldn’t be happier.

For Harbaugh and Kirby, the fans already have the pitch forks out and torches lit. Now they are just talking about what time to meet at the town square.

Op everyone just has to wait till Saban retires/dies/gets exposed for cheating etc.
