Here's a DC name I was told a while back, reviewing live

No argument on Northwestern's O ... But I still give credit for the Vols playing the way a good D plays against a bad O. UT's offense should have done more, but their D played really well.

I'm impressed by this bowl game performance. Tennessee D looks legit.

Northwestern is one of the worst offenses in D1. Duke looked like the 85 Bears when they played Northwestern this year.

This. NW averaged 11 points per game in the 5 games they played against a team with a pulse. Those 5 teams were Stanford(first game of the year), Duke, Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin. As I typed that, McCaffrey just ran right through that "tough" Iowa defense.

NW is a team full of slow, heady midwestern boys. If an SEC team like Tenn can't out athlete them, Butch Jones should be fired. Nothing to be gained by watching that game. It tells you absolutely nothing about Jancek's ability to be a competent coordinator. There are multiple years of coaching that show he is not an elite coordinator and should not even be in the conversation.

It looks like Jancek has only been a play-calling DC since 2010 ...

And from 2010-2012 he had UC's defense playing well enough for Butch Jones to take him to Tennessee. He's also improved UT's defense every year he's been there. So, where's the "corch" validation?

Some of y'all sound like anything less than Jeremy Pruitt is unacceptable.

And for the Aranda crowd ... I'm not knocking the guy ... But Chris Ash is a pretty legit defensive coach. And he was the DC at Wisconsin before Aranda. Charlie Partridge was also on that defensive staff ... He ain't bad either.

Oh, and the DC before Ash was Dave Doeren. So the last 3 DC's at Wisconsin have been good enough to become HCs. Again, not a knock on Aranda. But it's not like Wisconsin had bad defenses before he got there.

Conversely ... Tennessee was really bad on defense under Dooley.

Jones took Jancek from Cincy to UT with him, so that proves something? Folden took Dumbnofrio from Temple to UM with him, so I guess that validates Dumbnofrio too.

As for Ash being at Wisconsin before Aranda what does that prove? Ash is an excellent DC, and Aranda did better than him at Wisconsin. That does nothing to support an argument against Aranda. In fact, it bolsters the pro-Aranda arguments.

And you're right about UT's defense. They were terrible under Dooley. Now they're just mediocre after 3 years. That's not good enough. Shouldn't take so long to get UT with their recruiting classes playing better than they are.

everyone talks about where a d ranks in terms of nation. i want to know who they played how many pts the teams they played avg per game and what they avg vs say wisconsin or tennesee.

like say bama avg 30 pts a game 400 yds but against tenn did 22 and 300yds. its more impressive if u have a top 4 d if the offenses u face have a pulse.
its more impressive to me that oklahoma has a top 10 d then if say florida does. the sec east and even west had no qbs this past year. the big 12 had teams avg 50 pts a game. so its more impressive oklahoma is good on d then florida.

i think that is lost when talking aranada vs vangorder. van gorder at nd faced clemson, stanford, usc, they had a tough schedule , wisconsin played iowa , nebraska, minnesotta, lets just say the big 10 west wasn't an offensive juggernaut.

Well said my friend. Well said.

Edited to add that ND held Clemson 14 points below their season's average and over 200 yards below their seasons average.

But how do you know the offenses they played were actually good? What I'm saying is that this becomes a closed loop argument. A catch 22.

Brah...I'll tell you exactly how you tell

Deshaun Watson, Cody Kessler, and Kevin Hogan

OR

CJ Beathard, Tommy Armstrong, and Mitch Leidner

One of those groups has 3 pro's in it. The other does not.

Aranda's D played 4 teams with an offensive rank 100+ and another 3 that were 80+. Alabama was at #70 before the bowl game and Iowa was hovering around 70 before today's game as well.

Just awful offenses throughout the schedule.
