They were called “The Greatest Generation” for a reason. My dad was U.S. Army 9th Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. I salute all who serve and continue to serve, they are responsible for the freedoms we have every day.

My Uncle Nick, Paratrooper 509th Parachute Infantry Bn. America's first combat paratroopers - jumped three times in North Africa before the 82nd or 101st Airborne got overseas in WWII. Jumped in Salerno to relieve the beachhead, led the amphibious invasion of Anzio with the Rangers, fought up the boot of Italy against elite SS and German paratrooper outfits before they were bled out. Led the Invasion of Southern France. One of six from the original Battalion who arrived in England in 1942 and was still standing after the Battle of the Bulge where they held, lost and held the most direct crossroads (Sadzot Belgium) to Antwerp, the German objective of the Bulge. Rather than take a 100% disability, my father talked him into joining him on FDNY. He had a **** of a career there - spent his entire life in uniform serving others. He is shown making Jimmy Carter an horary FDNY FF.

A number of the wounded guys from North Africa that returned to the states, helped train the 101st. The 509 was the first infantry outfit to arrive in England, they trained with the British First Airborne - broke their obstacle course record the first time they went through it. British Gen Boy Browning was so impressed he awarded them the Maroon Beret to wear - firs beret worn by Americans. One of the 509's war time commanders was William Yarborough who brought the Green Beret to US Special Forces.
