Memorial Day was originally known as "Decoration Day" Why? Because the day was dedicated to the Civil War Dead as a remembrance
This holiday was first observed on May 30,1868, when about 5,000 people helped decorate the grave sites of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial Day became a National Holiday 1971

A National moment of remembrances takes place at 3pm est at ANC, every headstone is graced with a small American Flag.
