Guidry & This Defense are Awful

I wont completely throw Guidry away until we can get some better talent on D...lets remember, Kevin Steele was our DC and lasted one year..went to Bama the very next year and those defenses looked completely different then what he gave us. Talent matters. Our safety play will get a steroid shot next year when Stubbs comes and Patterson has a year under his belt. LB room is getting better talent too. Kiko just flat out disappears too much and its weird because I thought he played **** good last year. He has regressed.

Look I am not going to say this defense is great but let’s take step back from the ledge. They gave up 380 yards on offense. Nearly 200 of those yards came from three plays. We absolutely have to stop with the chunk plays. If we can fix that we will be fine with this offense.
Really curious on how we can fix the chunk play issue. What did Guidry do specifically in the second half against Cal to adjust?

You can't ignore the chunk plays when it's been a trend the last 2 weeks. The back 7 on this Guidry D has been bad in those games.
VT had 6 plays of 20+ yards.
Cal had 7 plays of 20+ yards.

Cal averaged 25 yards a reception. That's absurd, especially when most came to RBs and TEs. Cal had 4 receptions OVER 50 yards. Let that sink in. Against FSU and Auburn they had 1 reception over 20. Even against UC Davis and SDSU, Cal only had 2 receptions over 20 yards. That Cal offense is not good and shouldn't be producing chunk pass plays against this defense. If this team is expected to compete against elite teams, that needs to be cleaned up immediately. Both VT and Cal could have easily been losses with a few specific calls the other way....some think they should have been. You can't play like that against average teams all season without stumbling against 1 or 2. You definitely can't play that way against good teams.

We miss a plug inside. Barrow is a pass rushing DT that’s inconsistent. The interior guys are more like Manny guys. We need more size and girth (pause). We also need ball hawks in the secondary and legit cover guys that can tackle. We pretty much have a bunch of guys that want to rush the qb but don’t want to earn that luxury on early downs.

Not making an excuse because we should have won this game easily. However, CAL beat themselves against FSU. They were in the red zone 5 times and didn’t score.
Exactly. Had we made stops on any of their 50+ yard TDs and made them work in the redone, we would have destroyed them. Letting them score and several huge plays was a recipe for a sure L.

We were fortunate last night/this morning. Our D woke up and didn't allow anything the last quarter and a half, while our O was unstoppable.

The chunk plays are infuriating. We give away yards like a Diaz defense.

And most of those were screens or outlet passes. Can we not simulate any of this eye candy in practice?

They rather recruit tweeners for some reason.

Guidry tendency to over rely on the blitz has been exposed. The weakness of the secondary is not a secret and he's over compensating with the blitz. He has to adjust and find a way to field a respectable unit without being vulnerable to the big play. Run D definitely bounced back this week and Bain made a difference too. But thank God for the bye cuz Lance has his work cut out.

Our talent level in the secondary is simply poor. Mario needs to leverage this season into landing the Picketts and Hanks of the world.

The rest of the team is actually pretty **** good but we are no doubt a wonderfully flawed team. Every game is going to be a shootout.
This. A few weeks ago, I thought our Secondary wasn't Natl Champion caliber. Right now, I don't think it's even mid-tier in the ACC.

We need a massive infusion of talent there.

Yeah Cal had a **** game against FSU. They have 4 other wins and are tough at home. They are not the worst team in the ACC. We need a turnover badly. I’m proud of how we came back. But you can’t play horribly and always expect to come back. The Ward pick across his body was brutal.
3rd time he has done that. I’m surprised he continues to attempt that pass. You rarely if ever see a Pro do that. After the game he said he just did not have enough on it. Like he’s going to do it again!!! Coaches shut this down please.

To be fair, the DBs legit ran the other way and had guys wide open. I would not blame Guidry here. They ran for under 80 yards and 2.9 a carry. At the end of the day, guys need to do their jobs. Our did not and it was evident.

I just need Guidry to start with what will work for personnel.
Shouldn’t take a 1/2 of football to realize your dbs cant handle man responsibilities each week.
Also, shouldnt take you a 1/2 to do different things with the lbs instead of overcrowding the middle gaps fighting for space with our DEs.
We dont need to rush more than our front 4 in many instances. have one linebacker spy or run support or even delay blitz and have the other lb help one side staying out the DE.

Guidry makes the adjustments, but we don’t need to wait so long to make them. Our personnel is such that we know our strengths and weaknesses and we need to gameplan around that just as much as we gameplan for our opponents

I agree with those that have said Guidry Needs to just ditch the man coverage this season and play an Iowa-style cover-2 zone shell. If/when our talent in the secondary gets better in future seasons enough to allow it, then we can shift back

It won’t magically transform what we have in the back 7, but it might limit how much we are playing from behind and help us out a bit when the offense isn’t clicking.

When you're constantly giving up the big play keeping **** teams in it and hanging around..that should be a wakeup call to change your approach

Cal is abusing Guidry and this defense. Safety play is horrible, thanks #0 for nothing. The Cal OC is making Guidry his little *****
its not GUidry, when a proper play is called and a DB eyes are backfield trying to jump a screen its on the player for jumping the screen. The right play was called and it should be covered you cant blame the coach for that. What do some of yall watch? Its personnel mistakes cause of talent depth issues still plaguing the secondary.
