People get mad about takes or reports that they don’t like, or political views in editorials (shockingly on the old-school "opinions" pages that they don’t like) - unless of course its their network or blog or publication of choice that self-confirms theirs, so it's "unbiased", but this country is going to regret not having good local reporting and investigation at some point -if they you don’t already know your local YouTuber or influencer isn’t what I’m talking about in almost every case.

The media companies blew it; they brought on their own demise. The market has spoken, but a real, independent press, free from being bullied by their government, is super ******* important, and we are losing it.

And if you don't think that's happening, well... FSU is a good program right now too

Firstly, God bless Greg Cote, my favorite writer from the Miami Herald with Edwin Pope a close second.

My Opinion:

The issue with print journalism and legacy media is simple. The digital age accelerated print media’s death, but media and “journalism” has been dying sadly, for quite some time. There was a time where “journalism” was unbiased, here are the facts to the story, all the facts, and you the reader or viewer make your determination, as it should be.
But for quite some time, since the ‘70s there was a shift, and the bias becoming more and more relevant. Then came the genius of Rupert Murdoch, when it became blatantly obvious, the “news networks” were really just a political arm for one party, I mean CNN was know down here as Castro News Network for a reason, Murdoch created Fox News catering the news to the 50% of Americans who lean right, which in turn left CNN, even more MS WHATEVER THEY CALL THEMSELVES NOW, ABC, CBS, NBC to fight for the other 50% audience. Now if said “journalists” would have done their actual jobs of just reporting facts both positive and negative, regardless of what party was in power, there would have been no Fox News. In this creation and other outlets that lean right, it shown a gigantic bright light on the absolute BS that these supposed “journalists” are. They are all just propagandists now sadly, and the public in general see this. Thus “journalism” is dying.

Funny thing, when I spent traveling the country, from every major city to towns like Paducah, KY, interacting and socializing with the lcoals, one thing is for certain. ALMOST EVERYONE is similar in thought, center left or center right, but almost 90% of EVERYONE are just lemmings who vote REP or DEM no matter what

We never find out about Epstein without the investigative reporting by Julie Brown from the Miami Herald. Less than zero chance cnn or Fox would have spent a 3 seconds looking into it.

100% right. Say what you will, but the Herald was once a serious journalistic institution, and even today still has talented reporters on staff. Without the Herald, Epstein's crimes never get exposed to a wider audience. It's horrible what has happened to local newspapers. At this point, they have almost all been bought up by private equity and are gradually being bled dry. We have lost a major public good, whether you agree with the politics of some reporters or not.

You are referencing websites that have minuscule staffs and are built on using information from outside those staffs. It's not a workable model for a media company

It is if your media company is not bloated and trying to be the news. Reporters can still write their stories and make money for doing do. They just are not paid by a dinosaur company and survive based on the merit of their work.

Apparently a round of layoffs hit yesterday & he was permanently retired. Says he’ll continue with his podcast. Tough times at The Herald.

Really the final nail in the coffin for local newspapers. I only got the Herald and dropped the SS for Canes coverage. Adios.

Every one makes this comment because it is, of course, very true. But I think we have lost a lot with the loss of traditional print media (I could care less whether it is printed or digital). The reason being that legacy media did more long range, long running stories that required investigative journalism. Remember the days of 3 or 4 part stories? Stories that were investigated for months and months.

We have some of that still with people like Pablo Torre and the work he did on the Clippers salary cap circumvention, but we have mostly lost investigative journalism in favor of headline journalism which reports the news but never looks below the surface.

Would a story like Watergate even be exposed anymore? Which company in new media has the resources AND the willingness to let journalists chase a story forHar months? I think we have lost as much or more than we have gained.

Hard to disagree with any of this. Eventually the news will just be reporting what government spokespeople say, and reposting vids from cell phones.
