Not to beat a dead horse, considering there are a couple of threads about Simpson already on the board, but I found this article to be quite insightful regarding his Buford days. It also sheds some light to his connection with Richt. It's worth noting that Simpson's son went on Twitter to say that this is the best article that he has seen about his dad.

As I stated in other threads, I really like this hire for many reasons. Whether or not he can recruit or not seems to be a huge concern for many on this board, and that's a fair concern. I, however, am confident that Simpson will be able to recruit at a very high level, especially in the state of Georgia. His coaching ability speaks for itself.

Key highlights
From Dexter Wood (Simpson's AD/Predecessor):

"He ran the program, but the defensive line was his specialty. At every practice, he spent time in the trenches."

"He became a guru, to the point college recruiters would come around and get on the [chalkboard] with him. That’s what he studied in the offseason. He’s one of the best defensive line coaches, any level, anywhere.”

"He could walk into any school in the state,” Wood said, “and know someone.”

Wood on Simpson's stint in the NFL- "What he missed was molding young players. The NFL is totally a business. Jess is about more than just football.”

From national recruiting experts:
"That’s why Richt, during his tenure at Georgia, invited Simpson to teach D-line at coaching clinic in 2013. Their connection was forged on the recruiting trail; Buford is about 50 miles from Athens."

“He’s seen some of the best recruiters in the world come through his school and how they pitch. He’s learned on the job in that way. He’ll be able to recruit defensive linemen in Broward and Dade and bring more kids from Georgia to Miami.”

From rival high school coaches:
"He's a household name"

"A legend"

Great stuff Reg! Thanks!

That article sure clears up a ton of questions regarding recruiting connections, respect within the coaching profession, passion and the ability to "Actually coach the D-line."

Great stuff.
I agree 100%. I loved what his AD/Predecessor had to say, who is well respected in that state, in his own right (3 titles). He worked with Simpson for over 22 years as either his HC or AD. For him to say that though Simpson ran the program, he is really a D-Line guru, is huge. He said that Simpson "loves being in the trenches"

Thanks reg. The more I hear the more I like him.

Sounds good.

And it's nice to have a DL coach with a pulse again - whose recruiting territory is beyond his office.

Thanks, Reg. I don't think there's any question that Simpson will be a great recruiter.

Rick knows him well, and Rick has a tremendous reputation for hiring unknowns who turn out to be monster recruiters. It's one of his biggest gifts as a HC. Look at this list, and I'm sure I'm missing some: T. Brown, McClendon, Garner, Hartley, Dugans, the dude who is still at UGA who is now their best recruiter (McGee???), etc.

We all know all we need is a top performing d-line, someone who can attract d-line talent and coach them with enthusiasm. I'm more confident he can do all of that.

So it's safe to assume our new D coach will not be in meetings talking about how they did it at Temple?

I am excited. This is definitely Gods Plan! Kul did a great job getting our dline taught and educated but this guy will be the total package.
My thoughts exactly. Kool was a great D-line teacher, one of the best in the game. However, he obviously wasn't too keen on recruiting which didn't help us. Simpson appears to be more of a total package, with a higher ceiling than Kool here. Kool found a job in Bama where the boosters can recruit for him and he can just coach DL. Richt went out and found a guy that can teach and recruit. Win win for everyone involved, in my opinion.

Excellent point regarding Richt's ability to find hidden gems and place them on his staff. Likewise, it also gives me confidence when we sign recruits like Jordan Miller, because Richt has elite evaluation skills whether it's players or coaches.

No offense intended to Toolaghostski, but that fat lump of **** didn't even bother recruiting. He literally waited for recruits to call him. And when he met with the slightest resistance he'd quit.
He was obviously just looking for the next "opportunity" for HIMSELF!

Guys keep wanting to get on MR with his hires.Yea they are green or not the “name” hires guys want but guys like Hartley and Banda and even Rumph for the most are doing good/great jobs.

This was not a 1-2 year rebuild. This program had been torn down for the better part of 10-12 years.

We are getting there ahead of schedule. When we do get there the program will have a solid base to continue the success and not for just 1-2 years.
