Great Cane QB Jim Kelly

Awesome .... almost the loudest I ever heard the OB was when Canes played Penitentiary State in 91 and Kevin Williams had a 91 yard punt return TD .... what a great return and the noise was deafening !
That **** game....ABC preempted the national broadcast to carry the Saturday Clarence Thomas hearings....man, was I ****ed.

Jeez....you been cookin' a long time.

Maybe I should say "chefing"....I guess Chefs look upon their work as more than just cooking. After all, it's a creative pursuit...and you have to learn about a lot of stuff, like temperature, cookware, and just more stuff, I guess.

But what do I know....never got to try the Popeye's Chicken Sandwich but McDonalds brought back the McRib this week. That's what I know.
Yup....81 CIA Grad....so 38yrs...

I know you intend to put Manny in his place and rasie Howard but you can't put Manny in the zip code as Howard. Howard coaching linage is royalty - Blanton Collier, The Bear, George Allen and Don Shula - and Manny's is basically nobody. If Manny cold be 1/10 of Howard we would be blessed. Considering the players Howard recruited which at QB included Joe Willie, Ken Stabler, Jim Kelly, Bernie and Vinnie, not to mention the rest of Miami's first NC team, you could put him in a class with Butch the god himself. Again, if Manny recruits JUST ONE QB the level of one of Hward's list, we are blessed.

Manny graduated from a college that won a total of three NCs. Howard won three with Bear and then one of his own here. I am sure Manny went to a NFL game at some time while Howard was OC of the only Perfect Season NFL team ever, has couple Super Bowl rings and was HC of one of NFL's premier teams. I love JJ but Howard was the greatest coach Miami ever had.
I don't think Howard recruited Jim Kelly. I believe Kelly was already on campus as a redshirt freshman when Howard arrived in '79. In fact, I think Kelly and some of the younger guys were thinking of checking out and transferring when Lou Saban left and Howard came in. Fortunately, they decided to stay.

Some knowledgeable people told me Saban would've won an NC even sooner than Howard had he stayed. They said Saban was a particularly great recruiter, "He could get any player he wanted."
.
I was told this many years ago.

EDIT: Jim Kelly was definitely recruited by Lou Saban, not Howard Schnellenberger.

I just went through 6 or 7 articles saying the same thing. Howard arrived to find Kelly waiting for him.

Our self imposed Probation in 81 was due to Saban...and yes Kelly was originally a Saban kid, as was Tony Fitzpatrick...

I never knew much about the '81 probation. There was very little information available up here in D.C. Pre-internet. I remember the local D.C. radio station was on and they opened the news story by saying, "All dressed up and nowhere to go...."

I remember some UM law students or grads talked about suing the NCAA but talk of that died early.

Yeah, we did get some immediate attention nationally because of the upset of PSU.

We lost two games by what, less than ten points? Lost at Miss State with too much cowbell.

Miss St and Texas....Tony Fitzpatrick said the refereeing was a complete Mockery in both games...we beat 4 ranked teams in 81....FSU...UF...ND...#1 PSU....

The 81 Team in CaneinOrlando's opinion is UMs most underrated of all-time....No way does eventual Champ Clemson beat us if we were to have played...

Which game against Penn state was it when Kelly split out at wr and mike Rodrigue took the snap and ran it in? Precursor to wildcat?

A friend of mine who was more involved in the program in that era, Hurricane Club leader, etc. told me we were best team in country in '81. I believe it.
