Great Article on Manny, Miami and where we go from here

I found a couple of parts particularly interesting:

- Likewise, who is feeding crap to Barry Jackson trashing players, talking about who needs to be shoved out of the program and how they need grad transfers to fix the program? Even if it is true, that stuff should actually be part of the “full assessment” and done behind closed doors. Using the media as a proxy to get messages out to pretend they care, often to the detriment of players, while the paid professionals have little to no accountability must stop. You cannot run a program where the second something goes wrong, everyone goes leaking to the press, publicly assigning blame to scapegoats.

- You win and lose as a team and everyone has to be under no illusion of who is in charge, and that’s Manny Diaz. So, as he assembles his 2.0 staff, a lot of attention needs to be paid to chemistry across the offense and defense. How does the collective staff work together? Are they marching to the beat of the same drum? Does every coach understand his responsibilities and that Manny is calling the shots? And under no circumstances does anyone, ever, publicly criticize a player. If the staff is cohesive, if they actually like working together, the program becomes a much more enjoyable place to be, and the players have a better chance of success.

Good piece by Vishnu.

The bottom line is the job that Diaz was hired to do either (1) never existed or (2) doesn’t exist now because he destroyed it.

This is irrefutable. And where I’m at. Whatever they convinced themselves of to hire Manny a year ago, it’s been proven false. The situation is clearly not what they thought. So ... to me, it’s hard to justify doubling down into a collapse of the premise you hired into. Seems like a terrible idea designed only to protect the ego and reputation of Blake James. It won’t work, either.

To pretend like this was even within the realm of their wildest nightmares when they hired Diaz is disingenuous. There is no way they hire Diaz if they could go back a year knowing what they know now. Diaz is now tasked with a job that he was not hired to do, a complete rebuild of the program.

This just highlights the negligence in their hiring process. No in depth situational assessment, no clear hiring criteria or serious job spec. Just ‘oh isht hire him so we don’t have to run a search because who cares, anyhow.’ Where we are was not unforeseeable at all. It’s crazy to suggest otherwise. Anyone who thinks this is somehow some low probability outcome either didn’t think it through, or just is bad at thinking, generally.

But if you accept that this wasn’t some extraordinarily low probability outcome, then you really have to scratch your head at the decision a year ago not to take a search and hiring process seriously. And you have to be equally perplexed at why they’d be doubling down on failure now. If you are surprised today by where we are, then you should be seriously introspective about what’s wrong and how to fix it.

Really nothing new in this article that hasn't been discussed in depth from many perspectives here on CIS. The majority of us know what the issues are and the coming days will reveal whether or not those issues will be addressed in a manner that leads to success.

From Vishnu Parasuraman of 5 Reasons Sports

Vishnu has drunk the Kool-Aid. He believes that Corch Mammy can grow into the role of a real coach. What evidence do we have that he's capable of change? What leadership did he exhibit this year to improve his corches' performance or the team's?

After Diaz loses the opener to Temple, what azzholes comment will James have then? I have no faith we can beat ANYONE on our schedule except Wagner, and that’s only because I’ve never heard one word about that school. Don’t waist your time watching this team anymore. It’s just a symptom of a university wide problem that will never be resolved by the idiots currently running this crap college.

I posted it the minute I read it last off-season, could not understand fixing the culture out of one side of his mouth, and bringing back JT4 out of the other.

Then this crap with Martell; letting him get on the field after taking time off? Bad, bad moves and culture looks worse than last season if possible.

Scary thing is, I believe there is a greater likelihood that we are 1-3 next year after 4 games, then that we are 3-1.

Excellent article, especially for calling out James’s hypocritical comment on standards he was personally responsible for lowering, and for calling out Diaz’s excuses of ‘culture’ issues created by Manny’s superficial celebrations and false bravado.

My lack of faith will be etched in granite if only Rumph is fired from his defensive staff. Rumph deserves termination, no question, but he is the only defensive coach not tied to Manny. A reporter with guts should ask Diaz to explain Rumph’s firing but not Banda, Patke, Stroud, or Blake.
