"Gray Crow > Paxton Lynch" - Al Golden in 2012

I was doing a little reading up on Fuente/Memphis...

Lynch is 6'7" and 245lbs?!? Holy fack! Does he just sort of swat CB's blitzes away like mosquitoes? Monster qb

That rb is listed at 6'1" 220lbs

Every other school missed on Lynch also............

Yeah but was he at their camps ? Right in front of their face

As bad as this staff is, no one saw this coming. Even UCF.....minutes away from this guy's high school.....had no interest until literally on signing day. Everyone knew who he was, but no one thought he was good enough to commit to.

In fairness, Jimbo Fisher, Will Muschamp, Skip Holtz, and George O'Leary missed on him to. You can excuse the middle two because they weren't exactly hot stuff, but the other two missed too. I think it's just a case of a guy slipping through the cracks. USF should have taken him though. He would have jumped and not left had they done so.

Jimbo already had Winston committed in the same class as Lynch...

This is a very interesting article from 247 about Memphis QB Paxton Lynch, who's tearing it up in Justin Fuente's high-powered offense. It goes without saying that every in-state school missed badly on this kid.

Miami had the small private school quarterback in camp several times according to Lynch’s prep coach Allen Johnson.

“I had a real connection with a couple Miami guys and they thought Gray Crow was better than him,” Johnson said. “I was dumbfounded. We went to every Miami camp. They just didn’t see it. That coaching staff didn’t see it.”

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch's journey through the recruiting process

Every school missed him but I'll UF and UM needed him the most. However, he's at Memphis. FIU and FAU should have been on him for his size alone. Like you said everyone missed on him but boy is he a beast.

but some of ya'll herald Golden as one of the great recruiters in America. It's easy to evaluate a 4 - 5 star kid....but when you can evaluate the the 2-3 star kids (ala Butch Davis) then you are defined as a great recruiter and talent evaluator.

Thurston Armbrister, Courtel Jenkins, Nick Linder, Herb Waters, Ladarius Gunter, Clive Walford were all 3 star and below kids recruited by Golden that have had decent careers so far or have made it to the NFL.... Golden is a great Recruiter, just needs to translate on the field

Golden did not recruit Clive. So stop it. Randy did. And so far everyone on that list of guys Al recruited only two had decent careers. The others are still young. And Waters has been inconsistent.

Al is bad at a lot of things, but the guy didn't throw the ball in high school? You can be fantastic in camps, but that's far different than a game.

That's true but Miami has accepted several questionable commitments from guys reportedly based almost solely on their performance(s) at Golden's camp. Plenty of kids who play well in actual games get passed over for guys who look good in shorts and a t-shirt.

Jimbo had Winston. He only lost 1 game in two years as a starter. Jimbo did just fine. Oleary has Holiman who isn't bad. He also had Bortles prior who won the fiesta bcs bowl. Other than that UF and UM definitely missed out. Hey shout out to Famu for trying to pull a fast one haha. They tried. Anyway the way Al was giving out scholly's this kid should have had one. But he was already a hidden gem. When FAMU is the only in state offer this kid was obviously a hidden gem despite being a 6'7 giant.

Yeah, O'Leary has to feel good about his squad right now.

Come on man. Did you finally wait until this year to make that argument? Dude is two years removed from a BCS... It's crazy that we have became accustomed to UCF winning double digit games. This year is obviously an aberration. Unfortunately they suffered some key injuries and lost some talented players to the league this year. But qb hasn't been an issue until Holiman broke his hand this year.

That makes it OK.

Of course, Lynch attended all of Folden's camps and was right there in his face, and he still chose Crow over him. It's not like Crow was a good physical specimen or a productive HS QB. He was neither. It's not like Folden took a 4 star big, strong-armed guy with excellent HS production over Lynch. He took a horrible physical specimen with awful HS production over him.

Seems like the coach quoted in OP's post was astonished that Folden opted for Crow over Lynch. So, it's not like everyone thought Crow was a better prospect. In fact, almost no one thought Crow was a good prospect including pretty much every fan on the internet.

he was a JAG at best, but Charlie Weiss was recruiting him to Notre Dame and then to UF after he was fired from the Irish....point blank he had film, Lynch didnt

Nice to see you posting here, Robert from Waterloo, Iowa.

Actually Im from Overtown (if you knw where that is)..born n raised... I know alot of kids personally that went to UM, even went to school with some

Walford was a Randy Shannon recruit. And why completely neglect some of the low-rated camp finds that were atrocious evaluations by Golden?

- Larry Hope
- Nate Dortch
- Jake O'Donnell
- Ryan Mayes (staff prioritized him instead of Quincy Wilson, doubling down on their egregious mistake)
- D'Mauri Jones
- Gray Crow (staff liked him better than Lynch, as addressed in the 247 article)

Oh, and by the way, how on earth can you say Golden "just needs to translate on the field" after all this time? He's clearly incapable of doing that. That's been painfully obvious to everyone following this program for the last 2 years. But to say something like that as if it's still an open-ended discussion? Holy s***...

Walford was, but did he play under him??? No...and those guys were never UM material..they were replacements cause of all the recruits we missed on with the change and the NCAA bull****..... I knw of about 4 kids personally who wanted to go to UM but didnt because of that crap.....I was really ****ed about the Mayes pick up... would have xlearly wanted Q instead of that guy...smh...thats one recruit that will haunt us as long as he is at UF only because of the pull he has on some south florida kids

Going 0-7 with that schedule is a complete failure from top to bottom, not an aberration due to a few key losses. They are literally the worst team in America.

There were local coaches in Hillsborough and Pinellas County that was surprised that Miami offered Gray Crow.

FYI, Miami has Kayaa who isn't bad. It's funny that 0-7 UCF gets a pass for missing Lynch since they have some dude named Holiman, but Miami missed big even though Kayaa is the only person keeping Golden employed right now.

Amazing, and you still think Golden is a "great recruiter"?

You either are #Canesfam or I'm not sure what else. Golden is an average recruiter at best, personally I think he is pretty awful.

I don't think most UM fans give a **** about UCF missing on Lynch. We are supposed to be much better than UCF, and UCF missing on Lynch does nothing to change the fact that Lynch was at several Folden camps, desperately wanted a UM offer, but Folden chose a universally renowned bum Crow over him.

Lol at Deebro305 trying to pull ish out of thin air to make Golden appear as a talent evaluator and recruiter.

First, Nick Linder was NOT a find. His F'N BROTHER PLAYED ON THE TEAM, OF COURSE HE WAS GOING TO BE A CANE REGARDLESS!!!

Swear Armbrister was a last sec replacement as Golden had just got here in 2011 and was trying to hold the class together that collapsed after Randy left.

Jenkins was a solid pick up, I'll give him that.

Gunter was grossly misused while he was here, hence he went as an undrafted free-agent.

Walford was recruited by Shannon.

Stop trying to make it seem like Golden has done some magic around here. He sucks, on the field and off of it. Fact.
