Got in late from Hard Rock last night, some thoughts..

Dawson called the most diverse run scheme/plays in his time as our OC.

Last nights run play calling should be the standard moving forward.

I still think we need to operate out of wider sets with the WR kore often.
Plus he sprinkled in a little bit of Lofton….me likey

Alright, I got in late from Hard Rock Stadium on early Sunday morning. Some thoughts on Miami's 26-7 win over the Florida Gators...

- If I was a headline writer, I'd put 'Miami's Defense' Towels off Florida'. I dont want to crown Cory Hetherman just yet, but after this performance on Saturday night I'd not only like to nominate him for the Broyles Award, but the Nobel Peace Prize. His unit was incredibly good. Yeah, this wasn't exactly the 'Fun n' Gun with Danny Wuerfell, I get that. But on a night when Beck looked like the '24 version at times and scuffled, the defense was stout and downright dominant.

They allowed 32 yards total at the half, IIRC. And 141 total yards, with the bulk coming on their one TD drive that cut the UM lead to 13-7.

I know some will ask if this is about a coaching change or an upgrade in talent (especially on the back end), as I like to say, ''It's never just about one thing, but a little bit of everything." Miami's defense is not just more sound, but collectively just running to the ball and swarming

- This was a game that reminded me of George Benton's advice to boxers who had tough fights -- win tonight, look good tomorrow. This game was one where I felt Miami was leading 13-0 at the half, and it felt like it should've been 31-0. Something like this may have been costly vs an offense and quarterback who isn't so broken. Right now, the staff and DJ Lagway are deathly afraid of themselves. It's getting to a point where you think he has the yips

I give the Gators defense credit, they played hard. Even with their injuries upfront, they battled and will be one of the better units UM will face this season.

Elite teams can win when they don't have their best stuff, and other units can pick up the others that are struggling. I don't think Miami could win a game of this nature last season

- Speaking of the yips, the Miami Oline is considered among the very elite, but they have now had 8 pre-snap infractions the last two games. In the immortal words of Vince Lombardi, "WHAT IN THE **** IS GOING ON OUT THERE??!?!"

- Be honest, when it was 13-7 and Cormani McClain picked off Beck, did you get that sinking feeling it was one of those games where Miami was going to let one slip away? Instead the defense bowed up and made some key stops and eventually took control of the last 10 games

- To be blunt, Beck was poor tonight. Even some of his completions were off the mark, and I got the sense that Shannon Dawson's play-calling was impacted by that. For Miami to do anything truly significant this season, this has to be the worst game he plays this season

- Based on what I've seen thus far, Ruben Bain may have a season that rivals Warren Sapp in 1994 and Dan Morgan in 2000 for being the most decorated defender in UM program history. The impact he makes each play/drive can not be understated. Not only does he make plays, but he makes those around him better on a consistent basis

- Finally, I loved the white towels they gave out. The fans were really into it, and it was reminiscent of the Miami Dolphins in the early 70's. Before the 'Terrible Towel', the Dolphins were doing this. My only critique is that they should've been orange or green. Hopefully they give these out on a regular basis. The crowd was really into it and to see the waves of towels being swung around looked great.

As for the DJ, not bad, but there wee a couple of songs that seem out of place at a Miami game. I think I need to be like Norm Chow and coordinate a play list for these guys

- So Miami is 4-0 going to a bye week and prepare to go up to Tallahassee and play a hot FSU squad on October 4th. It should be a battle of two top 5 teams. It will seem like old times.

Like everyone else on here, I would have been ecstatic if we had beaten the Gators 100-0. But I have to admit I was just as happy on that 4th down play only up 13-7, screaming "Let's Get A Stop, Let's Go D" at the TV, rooting on the Canes. A tree falling in the forest. But that adrenaline rush was such an awesome feeling. We haven't won enough of those these past 20 years. But last night, we won that battle and then the game. Epic.

Posted this elsewhere. What an amazing season. We get to support our team playing ND, UF and FSU all in the first 5 games. And a **** good USF team, too. 4-0 baby, who expected that 6 months ago? Let's make it 5-0 in two weekends.

He really called a great game. Lots of two back power sets (which he hadn’t shown much of this year) and scheming up Lofton were great ideas. With our powerful RB’s, massive OL, shtty weather, Gator cov 2 shell and a skittish Beck, his conservative intuition was on the money. Also if the ref’s hadn’t stolen Brown’s TD, the Gators might have been buried for good in the third Q.

-Beck never looked comfortable. Agreed, that needs to be his worse performance or the ceiling on this team is a lot lower.

-Cormani made a great play on the pick, thought he’d be a bust but he’s seems to have figured it out on the field at least.

-Best defensive performance since 2018 UNC where they took over?

-Marty Brown is real deal. Wonder how Lyle fits in.

-8 on defense was a HUGE pickup, that dude plays with a lot of fire and physicality.

-Boys were smacking **** on D, really good game from our LB’rs.

-4 of our CBs didn’t allow a single catch.

-Bain and Mesi are the best DE tandem in America. Bains gonna play himself into a top 5 pick.

-All eyes on FSU

We can all criticize Mario but so far this season has showed he's our coach and should be our coach for a long time

Hes a Cane

Recruits like no one else, and we can now see what we knew was the way he wants to play. He wants to beat teams up

Everyone alwyas thinks of Miami for speed but the reality is even in the glory days it was always about physically beating teams up while the speed the candy

All in on that. Scoring TD's instead of FG's will take care of everything.

I think this was also due to Shannon’s play calling. Rhythm is such a critical component to a quarterback succeeding and last night we started getting extremely conservative with the pace of our play and how we called the game.

There is years and years of tape on Beck. I guarantee you there isnt a defense that Carson hasn't seen. These lazy *** takes have to stop no **** DCs will try to copy they've been trying to copy it for years.

The guy has lost twice as a starter in his career. Beck deserves the benefit of the doubt imo.

Its also worth pointing out that Florida's strategy back fired. Miami had 13 mins more time of possession basically an entire quarter. They limited their oppurtunities so much and basically were praying miami melted down. Its the equivalent of parking the bus in soccer.
Hopefully teams keep expecting this team to beat themselves, because I suspect they'll find these guys just do their **** jobs.

You made my heart sink when referred to him as “Shannon.” Please refrain from calling him by his first name. -fan with PTSD🤣

This.

We ran a counter for the this time this season, I think..

I absolutely hate our run scheme. I, partially, blame it for the refs calling back Marty's TD because we seem to just push the pile of every run play.

Moving forward, I hope Dawson calls more outside zone and counters, like he did in the second half, to mix it up. In most games, we're going to have the advantage up-front. But, why make it easy for DL/LB by running the same inside zone 'tush push' all game long?

Honestly, at the end of the first half, I had a sinking feeling they would go in and make adjustments to our D and make a comeback if we didn’t wake up on O. Holding us to 13 points in the first half left them a heartbeat away from leveling the score. And they almost did by that 7-point drive and the int. Thankfully our D continued to responded.

Great write up Steve. Every championship team has a few of these games. I remember 2001 where we almost lost to Boston College and a lucky bounce and Ed Reed stealing the ball from Matt Walter we would have lost. It is college football. I can tell you our team had heart. A great running game and good defense wins a lot of championships. We will see next game how they play against a dynamic runner and a guy who likes to chuck it. I still love Beck, he will win us some games coming up
