8. How Does Al Golden Keep Landing Elite Classes When His Teams Are So Relentlessly Average?

know what you’re thinking …… but the days of taking Miami recruits to booster-sponsored yacht parties and the VIP room at Club LIV are OVER. The Hurricanes are now all about academic/administrative integrity, which frankly makes Golden’s eighth-ranked class (a) booooooring, and (b) totally unexplainable, especially since Golden was on his hands and knees begging for the Penn State job less than a month ago. And Golden’s class could get even better, as four-star dual-threat quarterback Treon Harris is a real threat to rebuff Florida State for Miami even though nobody has a better track record of getting his quarterbacks paid than Jimbo Fisher.

A lot of the people on the outside looking in think Miami continually lands elite classes. Huge misconception.

yyyyeeaahhhh okkkkk buddy.. "Huge Misconception"

It is a huge misconception. Some people don't follow recruiting year round, you know. At Sunlife, Georgia and Virginia tech fans were chirping about how Miami gets all these elite classes but can't win the ACC.

We do get the 2nd best classes in the ACC almost every year. VTech, Duke would kill to have our classes.

They aren't elite, few are, but they are good enough to win the Coastal

Our recruiting rankings are consistently above the Dukes, Georgia Techs, and Virginia Tech. Right now we're number 8 in the nation in recruiting despite the fact we had a very average and uneventful season. Our class is currently above the team that almost won a national championship (Auburn). The only teams currently better than us (according to ESPN, but grantland is an espn site): Alabama (elite team), Texas A&M (elite team), LSU (elite team), FSU (hate to say it, but they just won so elite) ,v Volunteers (new coach honeymoon+storied program), OhioState (elite), and Florida (had a down year, but has won 2 national championships in the last 8 years, our last championship was 13 years ago!).

All in all, the general media has us as a "has been" storied program such as a Nebraska. Even more recently relevant storied programs (Texas, Oklahoma) are behind us in the rankings... And they're not even close (#14, and 15 respectively). Virginia Tech is all the way down at 29th, the elite program of Oregon is at 25th, and surprise Michigan State is at 38. Nebraska, the team you can draw the closest parallel between history and contemporary "averageness" is at 40th.

Face it, for the painfully average teams we have been rolling out for the last 8 seasons, our recent consistent top 15 class is nothing but a mind****.

If you don't think these classes are elite, you're just an idiot

There are 119 teams in the bowl subdivision

The 2014 incoming class of Miami Hurricanes will be almost assuredly be the 2nd time in the past 3 seasons that Al Golden has a class in the Top 11, according to the 247 composite (without question the most reputable source).

That puts them in the top 10% when it comes to acquiring talent.

The losing can be attributed to many things, including the fact that they have missed on some specific necessities, but to say that these classes aren't elite is purely ignorant on a litany of levels.

2 5 star running backs in the last 3 seasons
3 consecutive classes with an Elite 11 QB
Miami has probably recruited the offensive line better than anyone not named Alabama in the last 5 years.
A defensive backfield LITTERED with High School All-Americans
Chickillo, McCord, and AQM were ALL stud edge recruits
This '14 class has an inordinate amount of guys who can rush the passer at a very high level

Have they missed on an impact interior defensive line recruit? Most certainly, but I'm not of the belief that a miss in one area reduces a class to pedestrian status. There are PLENTY of schools who are fielding defenses with defensive tackles who have far lesser profiles than the ones we have and are succeeding.

Scheme...Youth...Lack of consistency at the most important position on the field

These are the reasons for our mediocrity. Not recruiting.

Do these classes pan out well? Usually not, but in terms of pure star values we do consistently beat them out by a lot. The problem is Miami fans think we're going to sign every 5 star always, even though they forget we're not Alabama... So its always a disappointment. Miami fans tend to have Ricky Bobby perspective in regards to recruiting, you're first or you're last

Tough to disagree with this. Facts are facts.

but are these classes elite? On paper, maybe. But the proof is in the pudding, these kids ain't elite

Which one is it, bad coaching the past decade or the players aren't elite? I notice the same folks flip-flopping their *****ing this morning. I guess as long as their *****ing about something they are ok, though...
