I agree with Al on this all or nothing cycle we've been in where the players give up when there's "nothing to play for." It shows a real lack of maturity and discipline in the program. In 98 and 99 the teams went to **** bowls, took care of business and finished the years strong.
Unfortunately for Al, I think its gonna take a much better coach to break this cycle, one who demands discipline and respect from the players, and instills the fear you need your players to have to be on edge..we havent had this since Butch.. The players were scared shytless of Butch and Tommy Moffitt
I think this is exactly right and Butch took 4-5 years looking a lot like golden has before the cycle broke too.
Ppl look back at butch years and forget everyone was ready to fire him after the 98 season.
Butch several years into his campaign here was doing things like lose by 50 to Syracuse and 5 in a row to Fsu and va tech.
You and everyone else STOP USING THE BUTCH COMPARISON!!! Their situations were night and day. When I look back at it, we were hella harsh on Davis. Dude inherited a team that dang near received the death penalty and we wanted a miracle in year one. Butch won bowl games, Butch actually beat top ranked teams while having TRUE attrition. You actually saw progress w/ his teams. Even when we got smoked by Syracuse w/ McNabb and Harrison (both had pretty stellar careers in the NFL, would you not agree?), we came back and took the hearts from No. 3 UCLA. Butch had signature wins, what signature win does Golden have? I'll wait.....
