Needless to say, the 2015 class has to be the most disappointing class to date, especially with the level of talent that was in the 2015 class in our own back yard. Most said, "sure we lost out on some major talent in 2014, but just wait until 2015." That seemed to come to fruition at the beginning of camp, as we were ranked in the top 10. There was a lot of excitement around the program...coming off a 9-4 season, the vaunted 2012 class were now the leaders, Nike gave us new gear...kids were flocking to us and then the 2014-2015 season kicked off and the rest was history.
The Admin decided not to make any changes even after Golden refused to make any changes to his staff, a staff that has failed this program both on and off the field since being here. Golden preaches continuity as key to restoring UM back to being the U. This Jim Jones approach has been the death of this program.
Yes, we know that every CEO is in charge, but every successful CEO has a strategical team, intact, to make sure production is met. Golden's biggest opposition to his success is stubborness and a failure to surround himself w/ top flight assistants.
D'Onforio was brought in to serve as the "Defensive Mind" of the bunch. Yet his lack of teaching ability or his inability to get his message across has caused a stagnant approach on that side of the ball. Furthermore, he's supposed to connect with defensive prospects during recruiting season, and we have yet see him pull in a top d-lineman based upon his recruiting merrits.
Coley was brought in to innovate our offense, yet our offense has ranked in the bottom third in sustaining drives and we took a step back in ppg. He was also brought in to solidify the much maligned fence around So. Fla, and he has done anything but that. Outside of his find of Kaaya, Coley's presence has been rather, meh.
Ice Harris was brought in to bring a presence that Miami was serious about So. Fla, however, he can't even keep one of the best receivers in So. Fla in Calloway...a kid he coached.
Kevin Beard was, too, brought in to bring that presence of So. Fla, however, he couldn't seal the deal on Scarlett, a kid he coached.
Jethro Franklin was supposed to be a DL coach that was big on technique. He coached in the NFL and was supposed to help out w/ recruiting. Not only has the DL yielded the fewest amount of QB pressures, Tackle for Losses, and sacks under his tutelage, but he's yet to pull his weight in bringing in a top flight DT or lineman.
Paul Williams was supposed to be............well, he's here. Not only is he here, he's caused several kids, kids that grew up rooting for the Canes, to run elsewhere to be coached up properly.
Brennan Carroll...Pete's kid...he was brought here to teach TE's how to beast and now WRs how to run routes. He's done "OK" in that regard, but his biggest job was to provide that inroad into to CA....and that road has been cut off at the 10 frwy stopping in Alabama.
Coach Swasey...in charge of our strength and conditioning...the idea of stuffing kids w/ Pizza to bulk them up, hilarious. To give an example of our strength and conditioning...outside of this year, the Canes consistenly ranked in the bottom 10 in rushing yards allowed per game. Why? B/c they were getting blown away in the trenches. Wyche, probably the biggest guy on the team, consistently blown off the line.
Baez brought in for recruiting purposes....nothing to fruition.
Besides Kehoe and Hurlie Brown no one has kept their keeps on this staff, and hence, you see the debacle of the 2014-2015 season in it's complete entirety, both on and off the field.
If you thought the 2014-2015 season was bad, just wait until 2015-2016. Sure Golden may win his first four games against a relatively soft schedule, and sure the slurpers will come back saying "he needed one more year" after we possibly go 4-0 to start the seaon; but, as we approach ACC play, Golden and Co. will show us just had bad of a decision it was for the band of misfits to be retained...and we'll see this same horror movie play out for the 2016 class as well.
