Glaring issue on defense

Setting aside the Lance Guidry scheme discussion, a big problem is that our upperclassmen are not very good.

Defensive recruiting has been abysmal for years.

The jury is still out on the underclassmen ('23 and '24 classes), but the upperclassmen high school recruiting is even worse than I thought.

Out of the '22 class (true juniors), the '21 class (4th year players), the '20 class (5th year players), and the '19 class (super seniors), these are the guys we recruited out of high school that are still on the team:

Chase Smith
Wesley Bissainthe
Markeith Williams
Jaden Harris
Ahmad Moten

That's it. Five guys (no burgers & fries).

Bissainthe might be the only one that gets drafted.

The upperclassmen we do have are transfers, most of whom are JAG roster fillers and not true standouts.

Mario has recruited well on offense, but the defense has been a disappointment.

There's promise in '23 and '24 (and '25), but we really need to hit on these evals. As FSU has shown, living in the portal is not really where you want to be for the foundation of your team.

So your complaint is that we aren’t getting much from his transition class? Guy didn’t even have time to change his suit when he showed up at central to recruit Wes lol.

Obviously the problem is not all on Mario.

The cupboard was bare when he got here, which was the broader point.

We don't have a foundation of upperclassmen right now. Our bust/washout rate was catastrophically high.

He's had 2 more recruiting classes and 3 transfer portal classes to take care of those issues.

The fact that he's stuck playing Jaden Harris for 60+ plays a game is an indictment on Mario, not Jaden.

ESPECIALLY when player acquisition is the single greatest skill Mario hangs his hat on.

Ummm any problems at this point is on the coaches. The players aren't performing that's the coach's fault. Folks don't need 10 years to get things running.

This is such a lazy take. But predictable.

If it’s always “on the coaches”, the best coaches would never, ever have weaknesses anywhere on their team. But that doesn’t happen. No one takes mediocre talent and just fixes it like we’re playing a video game.

Jafari Harvey has 5 sacks and JHH has two sacks for SMU. Corey Flagg has 66 tackles for Missouri. We ran them out of town, and they all transferred to play for defenses that are better than us at this point.
Missouri? Now that’s funny.

That **** is unacceptable at this point, you can watch a random game and Colorado was a 1 win team before last season.. I saw the offense send someone in motion their game yesterday and it was non factor for their defense, everyone on same page and they just passed it on..

We year 2 in this defense and no one knows what the **** is going on, everyone is confused, WTF HOW?!

It’s Guidry fault when he continues to play upperclassmen over more talented freshman and sophs.
Agreed. It was part of the Mark Denofrio philosophy for defensive failure. And yes, I know the kids will make mistakes, but get them out of the way and build for next year, when Cam will be gone and the schedule will be tougher.
