With Manny cleaning house on offense it's clear either Fedora is on the way or someone like him is. And what that means is an offense we have never seen here, or even anything close to it. If you're not familiar with what this looks like, you're talking about upwards of 80 offensive plays per game, if not more. No huddles, not much "check with me," everything is lightning fast.
Pros:
- It puts tremendous pressure on a defense. In fact, it's obvious that when Manny had to take stock of what offenses were the hardest to prepare for, UNC was at the top of the list.
- It gets the ball in the hands of playmakers, quickly.
- It forces teams to either sub a lot, or have their defenses in amazing physical and mental shape. It really makes it hard for teams lacking depth.
- It helps many QBs get into a rhythm and a groove quickly
- Really hard to sell anything but this type of offense to recruits right now.
Cons:
- You better have a smart, agile, fast thinking QB
- Your OL better be fast, agile, and ready to play at pace
- You'll see some of the quickest 3 and outs ever, leaving your defense little time to breathe. Things can unravel fast if both the offense and defense get off to slow starts.
Bottom line: It fits perfectly with Manny's personality that he wants to go this route. Also one thing I noticed about Perry this season is that he always wanted to go with tempo, but Richt almost always throttled him back. This could be just what he needs, or Jarren, who I suspect would thrive in this system as well. But beware.. There will be growing pains. This is a night and day philosophy to what these kids are used to, at least since high school. Don't expect miracles in season 1. But this is where major college football is going, and it's the best way to press an advantage of having more speed and athletes than your opponents, which will almost always be the case with Miami. You all have to be as tired as I am of seeing us level the playing field with the likes of UVA, GT, BC, Duke, et al. by slowing down the game and making it predictable. Those days are over, but it will take time. Enjoy the ride.
