Georgia Qb Mathis in portal

As someone who lost money betting on UGA because of this kid and now recently am winning money on UGA because this kid isnt playing anymore..HARD PASS. He is trash. And not because he is young. But he just isnt ready for the big time. Needs to go to a team like MSU where he can lay low and play for a team that has no expectations so early in his career.

Committed to 3 schools during the process - Michigan State then Ohio State then Georgia. That's usually a bad sign to start.

Then as a redshirt freshman, gets benched for Stetson Bennett during a bad first start and bails as soon as JT Danields steps on the field and shows a pulse. That's another question mark.

I'll take a pass.

All these criticisms of him is the same **** ppl said about Fields.

UGA is a qb abyss.

If you've watched any UGA games this season, then you know this is NOTHING like the Fields situation. Dude was handed the keys to start on opening day and he couldn't get anything going against lowly Arkansas. He had to be replaced by a former walk-on who was supposed to be 4th string going into the season (Bennett). He had a second chance against the Crocs when Bennett got hurt with a 14-0 lead. Look how that turned out.

I have legit watched just about every UGA game for close to a decade. Outside of UF (long story) they are probably the team I've watched the most not named Miami.

Mathis may very well be ***. I'm just saying I'm not going to evaluate him based on his snaps at UGA under Curby.

You guys are quick to write off a first year player.

In any event, the portal is giving any kid who experiences any adversity or doesn't have the PT he wants to quit. I don't like that aspect of it at all.

...especially at QB.

Agree in general but I'd also add that there are different kinds of portal kids. There are the King types - guys who've already proven themselves and their current program is in the toilet and they want to show what they can do on a big stage. Then there are the Mathis types - kids who get benched for whatever reason or don't get the chances they think they deserve and they bolt. These guys are harder to assess and I'm not a fan of taking these kinds.

Of course there are exceptions (Fields, who I wouldn't touch if I were a pro team), but in general, the rule works.

Agreed.

I think the portal has to change the way coaches approach the players. The majority of this board seems to prefer the old-school-hard-*** type but I don't know if that flies now. Not in this day and age. You upset one kid and he's gone. Coaches are going to have to get good at talking the kids up and finding a way to get talented players some early PT, lest you have some disappointed players that start mulling about leaving. New dynamic for coaches.

When OP asks whats the scoop i couldnt stop laughing

What do you think would have happened to Fields if he came to play for Enos, for example?

Fields does a lot of things at a very high level but if you break down his film last year or last week vs IU there are some glaring holes that can be exposed in the wrong circumstances.
