Way better local beer in Athens.
 
I've lived in Athens for nearly 15 years. Like what most people would say about anywhere they've lived for a long time, it isn't like it used to be, but I wouldn't dare live anywhere else in Georgia. The music scene doesn't put out big names that the tour the country and globe like in the past, but it is still quite a vibrant scene and I love it.

If you come visit during a big gameday, yeah it's gonna be a madhouse and might not be your cup of tea, but being able to walk all around campus with an open container on gamedays is a massive plus and if you happen to know folks who do their own tailgate, it's a lot of fun.

If you happen to visit Athens when there's not much going on, its gonna feel like a "cow town" like Michael Stipe once described it before moving here for school. But living here and being able to thrive here with the lack of jobs, there ain't a lot better small city/big towns in the country than Athens. It's hard to fully describe, but Athens and some of the surrounding area is just amazing in my opinion.

Full disclosure: One side of my family grew up in South Florida and a close family member played ball and was recruited by Miami in the late 70s, but went elsewhere when Lou Saban left. Other distant relatives on this side actually went to Miami. Which is why I'm a Miami fan and here on this board.

The other side of my family is from Georgia going back generations and some of which went to UGA. I was also born in Georgia and have lived here my entire life, which is why I'm in Athens.

I live a little north of Gainesville and have lived in or been close by my entire life . I personally love it. It’s quiet and as you said you have springs and beaches all pretty close by. Imo it’s the best part of Florida. I get Florida weather without any real fear of hurricanes. By the time a storm gets here it’s normally a tropical storm or weakened dramatically. I hate big cities and all the headaches that come with it. I’ll take my quiet country living and the peace that comes with it . Different strokes for different folks.
