Georgia High Schools and NIL

Georgia will soon join the 30 states who already have adopted guidelines regarding how high school athletes can monetize their name, image and likeness.

Georgia High School Association executive director Robin Hines said at Wednesday’s Board of Trustees meeting that he would have a proposal ready for the Executive Committee meeting in the fall. The matter was discussed on Wednesday, but no vote was taken.

“I intend to bring a proposal in October for the fall meeting,” Hines said. “We want to keep this thing on the rails if we can.”

Hines reiterated, as he has since the subject first arose, that this not a “pay to play” issue and that collectives to raise money and pay players will not be allowed. Compensation will not be allowed as an incentive to remain enrolled at a school. Players would not be allowed to use their school names, logos, mascots, facilities or statistics as part of any NIL deal.

“We’ve got to do it,” Hines said. “If we don’t do it, it’ll get done to us. Plus, I believe it.”

The funny thing is he thinks they can limit NIL in the manner he proposes. A high school student has the same right to be paid for NIL as does a 20 year, a 30 year old and a 5 year old. Age means nothing in this context. This will devolve the same way college NIL has devolved.

The culture of high school football is wild especially now to me in regards to the resources put forth, boosters, etc. I remember graduating high school in 2009 in South Florida and knowing about some of the facilities and overall culture. I live in South Georgia now. Power house schools like Lowndes and Colquitt County have indoor practice facilities. Valdosta HS has a special turf down for practice fields and their school alone looks like a small college. Coaches make six figures and more than some medical professionals. It’s crazy.

Georgia is already full of backdoor deals and corruption to get kids on certain teams. This is going to break the door down on that.

I wonder if it could benefit private schools though that don't offer athletic scholarships. Basically come here and part of your NIL deal (paid for by our wealthy booster collective / club) is tuition.

IMG national team, yes in FL, but as they don't play as part of FL's high school association, can they have NIL deals already?

Have to believe Florida is still more corrupt. Can’t transfer anywhere near as easily in Georgia. Private schools may not technically offer athletic scholarships, but still provide scholarships & financial aid in various forms.

You're quite possibly correct. Then again, I just think they're craftier about it. There's a lot of money in Georgia football from salaries to facilities, so they expect results and will pay to get them.

Last I read, 37 coaches in Georgia were making 6 figures.
Assistant coaches are pulling in 12k+ stipends just to coach a position.

I've got 1 to 2 more years in this cess pool and I'm fvckin' out. ✌🏻

Definitely more money & incentives for coaches - booster club bonuses & sweetheart deals (best example is coach getting keys to a new pickup after changes schools), teaching salary but don’t teach any classes or maybe a weight training class, etc. This stuff is big time football schools & not everywhere.

So are you headed to Georgia after that?
