This kid is on the verge of being named a 5 star????? A cane legacy at that!. Is it too late re-set his recruitment? He is impressing at the Opening.

George Karlaftis … Though he probably would like to have his last couple of reps back, one being a little brouhaha with Kardell Thomas, for most of the afternoon, Karlaftis was in contention for the Alpha Dog. He's an elite athlete and shows explosion off the ball and the length and size to be a top-tier pass-rusher at the next level. Karlaftis is in contention for a fifth-star and is already the No. 1 strongside defensive end in the class. Karlaftis is committed to Purdue.

Probably not a good sign that his 247 page still lists Corch K as his primary recruiter at UM.

We were and we tried. Kid visited here as well I believe.
His sister goes there and he wants an engineering degree from there.
A kid that would choose Purdue just rubs me the wrong way. I want dawgs on the D-Line. Not math nerds. If his choice is Purdue we can forget all about him

Wtf we should have been on this kid! Purdue really!?!?
There was a thread and discussions before. We were on him...or we tried to be. IIRC, the father played at Miami but kid grew up in West Lafayette, Indiana and is putting on for that crib.

I do remember us discussing him early this year and his deceased dad played at the U. What I did NOT know is that he is very good. I had him for a 3 Star player in my mind. For 247 openly to state that he might be moving up to 5 Stars and is the the Alpha dog at the Opening where the top recruits are at. Its impressive, I could care less if the kid committed to Purdue, FIU or Harvard. Might be time to re-look at him with our new DL coach. Our school of engineering is one of the best in the nation plus he is a legacy .... should be easier than most recruiting battles!!!

Purdue is the # 7 ranked engineering school in the country and #25 in the world. Miami is #99. Engineering pays BIG $$$ and certainly affords him a life after football. Not hating on this move. He's not a "sports medicine" guy.

We should reignite communication and press him for an OV. Blame the first go around on lazy *** Kul and see if we can peak his interest. With that being said, we preach all the time for kids to stay home at UM so I respect it with this kid. Salute!

I say this as a dude that graduated from a Top 7 institution...employers DGAF where you graduated from. They just care if you can get the job done, and that you are not going to miss work for stupid crap. Educational institution makes for a nice bullet on the resume and hopefully, some alumni connections after graduation.

When you're a top25 engineering institution in the world the alumni connections are a HUGE part of it. Advanced engineering degree opportunities pay well enough to hop from job to job anywhere in the world....and further.

Case in point.

That depends on what field you're going into.

If the school doesn't matter, then why pay more money for it?

Purdue engineering degrees are highly covetedand spots are tough to get. An employer in that field looking at two resumes is going to automatically give the Purdue grad a leg up over a grad from here.

I guess a new graduate position, yes, it certainly doesn't hurt, but as you progress up the career ladder in a given field, job performance is king.

I guess it's very relevant in engineering...in the world of medicine, employers care much less about institution as long as it's accredited and you have an active state license without derogatory information. I never had difficulty finding work after med school so, I thought it was more my work history (military service) that made me stand out vice the fact that I went to Duke.

That depends in medicine as well. You can never discount a degree from a prestigious institution, even in medicine.

Depends on the field and what type of career within the field, especially in areas where you are seeking prestigious appointments, say for example in academia for research based postings.

Obviously, how you perform as your career progresses is paramount, but never discount a prestigious degree, everything else being equal.

Even if you’re a single practice MD who’s hung out his shingle. You’re competing against other MDs, assuming all else is equal, patients will respond slightly more favorably to Dr. Bill with the Harvard degree in the waiting room than Dr. Joe, with the University of Banana Republic degree. To repeat, with all else being equal, all other variables the same.
