Gattis as a head coach candidate

Even without the current results, this (paying Ponce 2M to be your OC or not using 2M to acquire a top OC) would have been a difficult move to justify. With our current results including Ponce, the optics (not to mention the plain logic) are even worse for Mario. I believe Mario has cornered himself, thankfully, into one move: adjust the entire philosophy. Perhaps that’s wishful thinking.
Just my 2 cent

I don’t think he would pay Ponce the same amount Gattis is getting paid. Ponce will still be overpaid but I would think Mario would allocate that money to a WR coach that is a beast on the recruiting trail and more analysts.

Philosophy…I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news… that is not changing. Doesn’t mean the offense would be what we see now but this is Mario and this is what he is selling to recruits. If he can get the players to fit that philosophy… god bless him.

His philosophy isn’t right or wrong in general. The issue is the philosophy is wrong for this current team.

I don’t know. I think underpaying or going bargain bin shopping for an OC is a risky managerial decision in a sport designed for offense. His first OC hire, despite the ‘Broyles’ accolade, seemed risky to many. Doubling down on his philosophy is also risky. While I fully agree it’s a completely wrong match for this team, I think it’s suboptimal for any college team. Mario faces the negative recruiting of his offenses for a reason. Perception has become reality. We shall see what changes he’s willing to make.

just end miami football if we hire someones butt buddy who isnt qualified to be the Canes OC as OC bc he has a relationship esp after his QBs have regressed under his watch. there are plenty of quality candidates w the budget we have

I do not know if you have been watching the last several games or not but we are running a spread offense, as of late. We are also throwing more. Give Mario some credit to be open to it. Hopefully, a sign of things to come.
we are throwing more
but i would not say we are a spread in the sense that our offense does not stress teams vertically and horizontally
to me spread is not just about how much u throw or run
its about using the whole field vertically and horizontally with wide splits to stress the defense
we throw a lot but still play alot bunched up

we alos thröew a lot bc we had no choice w the injuries to RB and OL. its not out of preference. also, you can still run the ball well and a plenty of times in a spread offense. you dont need to be full air raid.

You aren't excited about the Ponce Coast Offense?

He sucks and wish him much failure anyplace else he goes. Period. He’s cost me money this season and is dead to me.

exactly
what i mean by spread
is using formations and space to stress the opposing defense and to force them to cover the whole field

Satterfield was more spread at fiu. This married to running game thing is another cis creation

For me, it's less about run vs pass volume and more about route concepts on the field and pace. It's one thing for Gattis to say "Speed and Space" in an interview. It's another thing to watch multiple WRs/TEs/RBs running almost next to each other on game day.

It's interesting how almost every sportswriter and Oregon Ducks fan is marveling at how much better the Oregon offense looks under Lanning than Cristobal.

I think Gattis, while terrible, is getting scapegoated a bit for doing what Cristobal wants.

We are literally running a spread, though. It isn’t the “bro set” and forcing the run for the sake of running. Let’s give credit where its due.

To go vertical consistently you need a OL to give QB time and speed to get behind secondary. We have neither of those. I do agree and wish TVD took more chances down the field but for some reason he goes to safe option, a lot.

this is what I can't figure out. he said the same thing at Michigan lol.

No argument here
