Inspired by this post at r/CFB...

The last 13 National Champions have either beaten Alabama or been Alabama. Except FSU which beat the team which beat Alabama

2006 Florida beat Alabama 28-13
2007 LSU beat Alabama 41-34
2008 Florida beat Alabama 31-20
2009 Alabama
2010 Auburn beat Alabama 28-27
2011 Alabama
2012 Alabama
2013 Florida State beat Auburn which beat Alabama 34-28
2014 Ohio State beat Alabama 42-35
2015 Alabama
2016 Clemson beat Alabama 35-31
2017 Alabama

I decided to go back in the time machine and reminisce about when Miami was the "gateway to the championship".

From 1983 to 2002, a span of twenty years, all but two national champions (Nebraska & Michigan '95 & '97) had either beaten/lost to, or been Miami...or beat a team which beat/lost to Miami.

1984 BYU beat Michigan which beat Miami 22-14
1985 Oklahoma lost to Miami 27-14
1986 PSU beat Miami 14-10
1987 Miami (2)
1988 Notre Dame beat Miami 31-30*
1989 Miami (3)
1990 Colorado beat Notre Dame which beat Miami 29-20
1991 Miami (4) /Washington
1992 Alabama beat Miami 34-14
1993 Florida State beat Miami 28-10
1994 Nebraska beat Miami 24-17
1995 Nebraska
1996 Florida beat Florida State which beat Miami 34-16
1997 Nebraska/Michigan

Seems you could almost equally say for the same period of time, Florida State won or was beaten by a team that won the championship.

Crazy when you realize Miami beat the National Champions on the road in 1985, lost in the NC game in 1986, won the NC in 1987, lost to the champs in 1988 on a BS call, and won the NC in 1989.

They were literally about 10 points away from 5 straight titles.
