Gaby’s pre-camp buzz

I think we wanted/needed a "sure thing" outside WR to pair with Daniels and Trader, and we absolutely missed on one. It's not a question about our current talent, it's an issue with how young that talent is and the lack of numbers. Point blank we are going into this season where yeah we COULD be excellent talent wise if Trader, Toney, Daniels perform like we all feel they have the ability to combined with if we get Josh Moore, Carr, and Marrion to all play well (and like they have the clear talent to), then yeah things could be absolutely great. But there obviously should be some caution that we are going into this season with so much youth at the position. That's really all there is to it. And if one of Daniels or Trader are injured the numbers becomes a real issue, particularly on the outside. I have basically no real issue or concern about the slot position tbh. Because I believe that Trader and Toney should be the primary slot WRs. Like I think Toney should probably be expected to maybe get 50% of the slot snaps I guess if he's really that good as a true frosh. But the remaining imo should be like Daniels and Marrion outside and Trader in the slot a lot. Sometimes Lofton will be in slot. Sometimes we will have Carr/Upshaw. I'm not a fan of Ray Ray, but he'll be able to contribute some I guess. And then worst case the older transfer Johnson should be a high floor baseline.... So really slot should have very little concern tbh.

I have never had a problem with the talent we had at the position. But we could have really used a high floor high confidence outside WR this season.

All of this + Beck having very limited time to throw with them before the season starts. I'm expecting some timing issues/wrong routes run early in the season from Beck+ the inexperience of the WR group.

So in y’all’s opinion, it’s a little bit of a combo. I think that’s what I’m hearing.

- We need to wait and see how the transfers pan out
- Need to wait and see how Jojo and Toney do as starters and if young guys can step up
- Will Beck gel with everyone at fall camp and throughout season?
- How soon can everyone catch on to Xs & Os?
- Didn’t recruit incoming freshman WRs as well as we wanted to, so this will continue to be an area of need / depth issue

Let me know if I missed anything. And thanks!

If you're strictly talking offense, yep. Though I would say the incoming freshmen WRs are fine, we just didn't have enough top talent from previous classes and the portal.... To this I'd add S and DT depth.

The thing is I'd actually say I'm highly confident in our group of WRs being good players. I do have a lot of faith in Trader, Toney, Moore, even like Ny Carr and Upshaw. I think Marrion will be a useful weapon offensively, and Likely very good on KR. I think Daniels will be a high floor guy that we can absolutely count on but has a big red flag regarding injury history. But The question is how impactful will they all be THIS year, and EARLY this year especially given like 4 of our 5 toughest games are all by early/mid October. It's just a lot of responsibility placed on Freshman WRs ultimately. Not that I think it wont work out. But if you just view it from what would give us the best odds, it's obvious that the best outcome was getting another good Outside WR (or like keeping Horton).

I think if we just kept stacking WR classes like the last 2 we have gotten - Trader, Carr, Chance, Toney, Moore, Upshaw - I think that'd be plain great. What would truly make it go from great WR recruiting to ELITE is honestly just adding 1 top-top 5star type WR to that every 3 years that is a true difference maker.

Context matters...who did they rush on in the SEC on? They literally played the bottom half of the SEC except Georgia and they had 67 yards.

2-10 Mississippi St
6-7 Oklahoma
7-6 Vandy
7-6 Florida
7-6 Arkansas
4-8 Kentucky
8-5 A&M

So lets not act like they went through some gauntlet as you're leading to believe. Thus I can't help you.

Wool removed!!!
they ran for a grand total of like 20 yards against uga lol

Yes, sorry, they were replying to my question on the previous page that was specific to the WR group.

This definitely helps bring more clarity. Another reason I originally posed the question was because I was scared that the WR group was at risk of being this year’s 2024 safety group. 🤣 Glad I can cross that one off the list.

We whipped up on the best team on that list and would've did the others exactly the same

Will never understand why people continuously care so much about backup Qb. Whether its NFL or CFB fans of any team, they always care so much about backup Qb... If your starting QB gets injured you just about always ****ed, period. It's not worth caring about.
bc our starting QB is coming off surgery

They still ranked 29th in scoring while in the SEC and made it far into the playoffs losing to the champs. Lol. WTF are we talking about?
They were a blown targeting call from losing to AZST in the 2nd round. They weren’t exactly an offensive machine the last 5 games of the season, other than against Clemson. They ran on Clemson, but so did everyone else. Clemson was 85th in rushing defense.

No disrespect to him, but I hope he doesn’t have a big role on this team. I would rather see if guys like Carr can step up
We'll see what happens in camp, but they're expectations for Johnson are growing. Carr doesn't play the slot and Upshaw has already passed him on the depth chart. We will see what everyone does in Fall camp, but I personally see Carr entering the portal again. Everyone fresh in camps we will see. I think all 3 WR transfers are going to better than our fanbase believes. Hopefully it pushes the younger players. If JoJo stays healthy, this room steps up big. Daniels and JoJo eat.

Did some research on him, only 3 dropped passes in his career. So he’s pretty reliable at the very least
I was actually going to reply to you with that stat lol. People are sleeping on this guy but he is exactly what Carson needs. Carson had trash numbers in 2024 because of 3 things 1. No running game, Miami’s three headed monster solves that problem. 2. Poor offensive line, when throwing from a clean pocket Carson is one of the most accurate QB’s in college football history. Miami will have one of the best offensive lines in the nation. Finally Carson’s receivers last season lead the SEC in dropped passes.

Carson nor this offense needs super stars at WR, it has been proven that players will put up big numbers in this offense. No better evidence than 3 undrafted free agents as the 3 starting receivers for last seasons #1 offense (and let’s not say it was because of Cam because X and JG had some of the best number in the ACC with TVD).

What this offense and Carson need is receivers who are smart enough to be where they need to be and to catch the ball when it’s thrown to them.

Tony is extremely smart , was an academic walk on at FAU and was on the deans list season at Cincinnati in addition to that he has only 3 career drops in over 100 targets. On top of that with his 4.5 speed, he gives Miami some run after the catch ability. Give him the same exact opportunities as X and this guy will make plays.

Kid went from a walk on at FAU to leading Cincinnati in touchdown receptions, I will always bet on a smart hard worker. Players like him just always find a way to succeed.

I do believe Malachi will eventually take the starting spot but Tony Johnson won’t be a liability while Malachi gets up to speed.
