Gaby’s pre-camp buzz

I’m at 9-3 right now:

Split ND UF SMU and Ville

Drop an oopsie game (most likely @ Pitt)

I'm with you but I think we are more likely to drop games like VT and Pitt (one or both of these will be night games....in late Nov) than we are SMU and Louisville, imo. Fizzling at the end of November terrifies me more than Sept/Oct, especially when ACCCG will hang in the balance. We typically choke those kinds of games away.

David lake had a good breakdown today with Bud on their summer school series.

Said this is probably the most talented team he’s covered at Miami since he got here in 2007. I believe him. It’s not the best in the country but it’s probably one of the 10 best.

Also said the real barometer for a successful season is Charlotte, and I agree there too. We can discuss nuances of each game through the year, but to me the bottom line is if we get to Charlotte, you’re going to have a hard time convincing me it wasn’t a successful year. And if we don’t, you’ll have a hard time convincing me it was.

No worse than 3-1 in the non conference.
No worse than 2-1 against Louisville, SMU and FSU
No worse than 4-1 against Stanford, VT, Pitt, NC State, and Syracuse

playoffs... or bust

Agreed, and I should’ve included an expansion of my point, I think if you’re in Charlotte, you’re likely in the playoff. Obviously things can happen but I am thinking as if Charlotte and the playoffs are one and the same.

So yeah, playoffs or bust. If we can get there without Charlotte, so be it, but I highly doubt that.

The following have to be homerun players from the 24 class for us to reach the CFP this upcoming season in my opinion:
Justin Scott, Blount, Lighfoot, A. Jones, Trader, Lofton, and Lyle. OJ is already there.

No excuses!
Home run is a no on all except OJ. But I would say that Lyle and lofton have already proven they are above average guys. Lofton was a wrecking ball when he got the ball in his hands. He could be really unique for us.

Trader Scott and Blount have gotten rave reviews tho so I will sip the koolaid for now. Jones is all tools and hype currently. Lightfoot should be able to rush the passer on obvious pass downs.

What about a scenario where we beat ND & UF but lose two ACC games while Clemson & SMU have same or worse overall records but with one ACC loss apiece they go to the ACCCG while we get an at large playoff bid. Is no conference title game yet with playoffs an L or is winning the conference itself more valued ?

In that scenario, 10-2 while beating ND and UiF and making the playoffs is a successful year to me.

IMO there aren’t a ton of scenarios where we miss Charlotte and make the playoffs or make Charlotte and miss the playoffs, so in my mind, those two are basically the same goal.

We have to win the ACC or make the playoffs or this year is a failure.

After listening to DMoney’s interview of Moten I’m betting on this kid to be our best chance at good DT play. He looked good at times last year, I though nearly as good ad Barrow. I just don’t trust Blay to transition as well as we hope or Scott to step up to the level we hope. They’ll be fine but if we want a breakout DT we need Moten to be that guy.
lmaoo trusting moten over Scott? WILD

I agree. I have PTSD from our typical late season sputters.

And that speaks to lack of depth. We will luck up and assemble an impressive starting unit, but dear God if the starters go down our dropoff has historically been frightening.

I’m not worried about SMU or Louisville. Their defenses don’t scare me and I feel better about our defense’s chances this year than last year.

The November games do scare me.
