“I think the biggest thing we try to do with our players is we try to get them to make a quality business decision,” Saban said. “You can’t improve your value once you get in the draft. It is what it is, and what a lot of people don’t realize is everybody wants you to come out for the draft, but once you say you’re in the draft every team looks for reasons not to draft you.

“They’re making a significant investment, and they want to make sure they’re getting quality for what they want to invest in, so if guys can improve that as college players, that’s certainly something we would like for them to do and we’ve had a significant number of guys that have done that and come back and improved their draft value. We’ve had guys who have gone out because it was the right thing for them to do and they’ve done extremely well. Every case is different and I think our players, because they’ve seen both sides of this, sort of understand the business side.”

Allen, who received a second-round grade from the NFL Draft advisory board last year, is the embodiment of that analysis as ESPN’s Mel Kiper now rates Allen the No. 3 overall player. If he ultimately gets drafted somewhere in that range, Allen’s decision to come back will guarantee him at least $16 million more on his first contract than if he had been an early second-round pick.

McIntosh and Norton would do well to read and seriously consider the above.

Nice, thanks for sharing. If good people are around them, they would reconsider, because they were far from dominant against good defenses.

Good post, Earnest. It shows the value of coming back and getting better makes a difference for all but a select few. All of our guys should return if they are able to.

I was worried about you the last couple days as I've never seen you on such a non-stop mad tear. This thread is something most of us can agree on.

All of the negativity tripped a circuit...

Hope you and your family enjoyed the holidays.

Be well!

Because of the players agreement the dollar difference is less but there is another reason to go for higher round. Those first and second round picks get a lot more time to show worth. Nobody wants to admit they are fools, which is what you look like when you miss on early picks so they stay on team much longer than a fourth or lower. You have to be a real piece of work to not get 4 years if you get drafted in 1st round. Plus more likely to get second contract even if you have not proved all that great. Add that to the money difference and the true picture is clearer.

None of us know their financial situations, life goals, etc.

I don't think its the wisest idea, but I'm not hating on the kids or being selfish because I know their departure means Miami will be significantly worse next year. Do what they want to do. I think both end up getting drafted somewhere. RJM probably earlier then expected, Norton later then expected. But both will be on rosters next year making money.

The money they "lose" could be a lot or could be nothing. We'll never know.

Just like Yearby's decision. Clearly not great, but we have no idea if he would have been given a shot this year.

If they leave, just say "thank you for your service" and wish them the best.

only downside is allen dropped to mid-first bc of shoulder concerns ... but still netted more than $11 mil guaranteed

Up here in Orlando. Saw an older gentleman in LSU gear waiting outside space mountain. Started chatting it up. He basically told me that what he heard about UM us that the players are sick of being broke. He said not only are they not getting the big sec signing bonuses, they’re also surrounded by a very affluent neighborhood and have to go party in a very expensive city. I do t agree 100% but maybe that has a small influence

Underclassmen Fleeing to NFL

Misery loves company…

Four Auburn underclassmen have announced their intentions to leave school early and enter the NFL draft.

Junior running back Kerryon Johnson was the first to declare, making his announcement Tuesday night. The SEC offensive player of the year led the conference 1,391 rushing yards and 20 total touchdowns. His 17 touchdowns in conference play were three more than any other SEC player, and his 15 rushing touchdowns in that span tied Auburn’s all-time record.

On Wednesday, All-SEC defenders Carlton Davis and Jeff Holland also announced their decisions to leave school early and pursue their dreams at the next level.

Davis, the junior cornerback finished with 36 tackles, one interception, one fumble forced, one fumble recovery and a team-high 11 passes broken up this past season. For his career, he had 29 passes broken up and four interceptions in three seasons.

“Carlton has been a starter at Auburn from day one, using his talents and hard work to earn All-America honors,” Malzahn said.
Holland enjoyed a breakout season in 2017. The junior led Auburn with 13 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. He also had 45 tackles, 22 quarterback hurries and four forced fumbles on his way to earning first-team All-SEC honors from the coaches and the Associated Press.

Lastly, running back Kamryn Pettway also opted to leave school early for the NFL. Pettway rushed for 1,224 yards and seven touchdowns a year ago, but he struggled with injuries this past season as he finished with 305 yards and six touchdowns in just five games.

At least it wasn’t a highway rest stop then the creepy meter really starts hiting the red.
Just started talking college football with the guy while waiting for my kids.

As for the affluent argument...

Miami has not suddenly become a place for the rich to live and visit. For the last 50 years Miami has been a playground and you haven't been able to swing a dead cat by the tail and not hit a yacht, exotic automobile, mansion, 5 star restaurant, hotel, night club, actor/actress, private jet, super model, etc.

The description above has applied to Miami since the Canes first National Championship and the economic status of today's players have if anything, improved (however limited) over the players of the past.

I am not saying there has not been some negative impact on the players based on the Miami environment, but I believe there has been a cultural change that speaks more to recent societal changes where kids are all about instant gratification and a long term view on almost any subject is foreign to today's youth.

I am going to end this post here, because I am going to go outside and start screaming at the kids next door to turn the music down and to stay off my lawn!
