Friday nite games

There's nothing wrong with being named after a cash crop. Cotton State, University of Soybeans, Tobacco Tech, Corn College, among others.
How about UNC Chapel Bill or the Charlotte 1&8ers (doubt they have lots of gold), or the EMUs(eastern Michigan University)?

Hit happens every once in a while. Maybe they have oil money?

Rice's endowment is $8B.

Or about 4 times more than SMU (which is in the process of making its coach one of the 10-highest paid in CFB) and about 5-6 times more than UM.

Rice clearly could be a better in football if the right alums cared enough to make it happen. Maybe when Rice got left behind after the Southwest Conference implosion 30 years ago, they just said the heck with it?

Rice couldn't care less about el futböl meng.

It's a school cultural + admin thing. Basically Stanford + Berkeley of Texas.

We absolutely NEED NEED NEED to beat SMU. Go out there and leave no doubt.
Miami needs to run up the score on every team to have an at-large chance.

If our Canes squeek bye SMU today, likely scored just as bad as a loss in minds of Playoff Committee. They are just looking for any reason to pack the slots with SEC/B1G teams.

We don't make the rules, but I believe thems the rules.

That QB stat line is Kirby Freeman vs NCState-ish.. maybe even worse.

Didn't think it was possible.

I turned on the game a little late. I saw a drive of Syracuse play O and the fumble return for a TD on the UNC drive.

I immediately went on William Hill and threw £200 down on Carolina Blue. I doubled my money.

There's no way that Lacross kid is the 2nd best QB at Syracuse. That's coaching malpractice if he is.

I mean they've just said he plays a position in Lacrosse that gets subbed off.

Fran Brown is a ******* for running this kid out there.
He is a defender. They always switch the long stick guys for a regular midfielder when the team goes on offense.

They have never been competitive on nat'l landscape in modern era.
When I was a little kid in the 50s, Rice was pretty good in the old Southwest Conference. May have even won the Conference championship a time or two.

They had two outstanding QBs -- Frank Ryan and King Hill. Ryan was the Cleveland Browns QB for the decade of the 1960s (the Jim Brown era) and Hill played the position with the Phila Eagles.

Tommy Kramer was an All American QB for Rice in the mid 1970s. Was the Vikings #1 pick.

Watched the first 10 minutes of their game until UNC-Syracuse came on. I've heard louder crowds at my little granddaughter's dance recital.

But often could say the same for the anemic atmosphere at Stanford, Northwestern, Duke and Vanderbilit. And yet indifferent alumni aside, those prestigious institutions are spending bigly on football facilities and NIL because their administrators comprehend the huge benefits in competing at the highest tier of college athletics. So they willingly shell out the dollars to keep their seats at the P4 table.

Doubt they'd be doing to same if they were stuck in a G5 conference with little to no hope of a escaping like Rice

Wife and I were in that area of Houston a couple years ago.

Beautiful little neighborhood with museums and parks and all that near the university.

Like an oasis amongst all that Texas sprawl

Yeah, I was on the Rice campus one time around 1980. IIRC, it had sort of a modern Spanish/Southwestern architectural feel. Very nice, as you say.

Super Bowl VIII (a Dolphins win) was held at Rice Stadium, a big venue back in the day at 68,000. U of Houston played games there for many years too.
