I see that the Big 10 considering making athletes ineligible for competition for their freshman year. I have to think that would severely hamper their recruiting efforts with the big time 5 star athletes. For all of you recruiting gurus out there do you feel the same way? I can't imagine that there would be many in any of the Big 10 athletic departments that would be happy about this. Especially in basketball where a lot of the top kids are only looking to stay for one year.

It will deter recruits...2016 rules is going to cause a brief hickup in recruiting for a couple of years... 2.3 GPA to be eligible to play as a Fresh...or be an Academic Redshirt

I like it!

Didn't know this, but I like the rule. Makes a ton of sense for STUDENT-Athletes.

Thanks for sharing this.

This used to the rule. When my father played in the 70s, he had to wait until his 2nd year to play in Varsity games.

I guess we can bring back the baby canes? Only the long term fans know what I'm talking about.

It only works if the NCAA does it across the board and increases the overall amount of scholarships, otherwise it's recruiting suicide for the conferences that do it.

I don't see it happening for a few reasons:
1 - Cost: The amount of additional scholarships would be huge in football. You can't play with 60-65 players. It's like having a on sanctions all the time. Look at what it did to USC even with their great recruiting classes. I don't see the NCAA raising the scholarship limit from 85 to 100.
2 - Title IX: More scholarships for football means a greater imbalance across the board.
