Freshman All-American

I like Blount in the D as the Strong End/Interior on pass rush downs. Hayden Lowe and Blount will hopefully be next years Bain/Mesidor.

It will be interesting to see Lightfoot, Pickett and Scroggins III progress next year, if they can put on a little more size but maintain their speed.

We will be losing Toure, Bissainthe, Alderman and Smith potentially next year. I really can't wait to see Wiley ready to play and unleashed. We may need to find someone in the portal for next year.

While we are deep at corner we may need to address nickel in the portal as well.

Curious to see how Day and Pruitt progress at Safety next year. If Fitz can add a little size and sharpen his tackling he has such an amazing skill set at deep safety.

I asked this yesterday to D$ off the board. Blount is getting regular - non-pass rush - snaps at DT? I haven't seen them. Clearly, I could have missed them. Any specific games I can watch where this happens?
Blount: 52 DT vs 48 EDGE Snaps. So 100 total snaps and he missed a game. He played 24 snaps at DT against FSU vs only 12/14 against UF/ND respectively.

Lightfoot: 78 total Snaps. He played 26 snaps against FSU and 14/9 against UF/ND respectively.

I haven't particularly noticed Blount at DT in many run downs, and judging by the fact that the snaps counts for Blount at DT seem to align with the snap counts of Lightfoot on the field - and given Ligtfoot basically only comes in specifically for clear pass downs... It does seem like Blount is Playing EDGE on Run Downs, and DT on Pass Downs...

Plus Keionte Scott has played 282 snaps. He never comes off the field basically while the starters are in. Bain and Mesidor have 258/256 snaps respectively. So that's like 48 total EDGE snaps for starters without Bain or Mesidor in game... Oh hey would you look at that, Blount has 48 EDGE snaps...

All that to say I think you're correct. I mean I'm sure theres a couple non-pass rush snaps with Blount in at DT... but it's almost exclusively pass rush situations.

2026 my guess will be Cantwell.

The defensive side will be determined by who is retained, as it stands Miami will basically return a 3 deep at each position with the except Nickel. I would guess Hayden Lowe as a redshirt freshman.

He has stated in multiple interviews that this is his last season. With such a down DT year, if he just continues to play like he has so far this season, he will be drafted in the 4th - 5th round.

I would love it if he returns but I just don’t see him returning, unless he gets a undrafted grade.

Also pretty sure pruitt is a SO this year, I know the miami site list him as a FR, he played in every game last year.

Blount is a DE that Miami needs to eat some snaps in the DT rotation right now. I think if they had better options at DT #4 we'd see Blount giving Bain breathers more often.

YEA BLOPUNT IS A STR8 UP EDGE.

mAN HE GOT DECLEATED ON A PLAY AT DT IN PASS PRO AGAINST FU....

He can log some snaps their in passin situations at dt but moving forward he is an edge.

Thanks.,

I know we were onto Carroll a little but doesn't seem like we pursued him much or maybe he wasn't intereted. No idea about Sowells.
We had Sowells OV. I guess we must have stopped pursuing once we got SJ. https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/isaac-spike-sowells-3-ol-from-louisville-ky.190292/

Carroll visited, but seemed like Bama upped the bag to a range we didn't match. https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/ol-michael-carroll-offered-bama-commit.193022/page-5

I do believe Blount will continue to play both, I just see him getting the bulk of his snaps at DT. He is playing most of his snaps there now, although it’s in the speed package, he has logged more snaps at DT than DE.

I just believe he could very easily be 290 by 2026. He looks small to me out there and he is 270, he just has so much room to grow and he is only 18. He plays with a lot of power and a very high motor, two very important traits for a DT.

There is no way this staff settle for only having Chris Ewald at nickel. I fully expect them to be very aggressive in the portal again. The players listed are only guys who are currently on the roster and have the eligibility to return.

I see Wiley in the rotation next season, I wouldn’t be mad at easing him in, basically giving him the role and snaps Chase has now.

Bobby Washington is who I am the most excited about. His length (pause) 4.3 speed (remember he is faster than Robby) pass rush skills and knock back tackling will make him an All American in this system.

I'm pretty sure ALL of Blount's snaps have been out of the DT spot in passing downs.

I see no reason he doesn't play both DE and DT next season when it will be him. Lowe and McConathy as the 4i guys. That said, I was watching Cam and the Titans yesterday, and could see Blount growing into a Simmons type role. But he's far from there right now.

It's pretty rare. 2Q against ND the drive that started around 11:10 mark he was in at DT to start on non-obvious passing downs for the first 3 plays. Will try to check the other games later.

Nothing in USF game up to 5 min left in 4th (not worth watching after that lol). Simpson was the 4th DT on early downs when we started to empty the bench.

Last series of 2nd Q against UF he was in at DT, but they weren't a threat to run then.

2nd drive against FSU he was in at DT on 2nd & 14 and he got handled easily on the Sawchuck run that Mesidor left the edge on. He was subbed out next play, which Moten got hurt on. Next series when Moten was out we went with Scott & Blay on non-obvious passing downs.

Pretty clear Hetherman does his best to avoid giving him DT snaps on non-obvious passing downs. We are essentially playing 3 guys at DT. I assume if any one of them misses more than a series that Simpson would be the 3rd DT on early downs.

That’s what I figured, but had been told differently. I key in on Safeties and then the middle of the defense. Thanks for validating that. I don’t currently see the evidence for his success as a non-passing down DT, but surely given his age, he can grow into it. Another option would be to let him grow a bit slower, play a hybrid role next year again, and go out and get a DT.

He's still really young so I could see him growing into a full-time DT next year, but this year I really hope he doesn't have to play many more run downs as a DT. Think teams will just run right at him and have success.

Fast forwarding through those games to check it emphasized to me how thin we are on the DL, and how Hetherman has even shortened the rotation since the ND game. We tried subbing both Bain and Mesidor out one series against ND (with Bryant and Blount in at end) and they quickly drove from their own 20-25 to our 40, where we subbed Bain and Mesidor back in. I don't think we've tried playing without one of them on the field since then when a game has been in doubt. Hopefully Cole can get some snaps at end and Simpson can get more reps as the 4th DT on early downs in the coming weeks.
