We go into the 4th quarter with the game tied. We throw an 18 yard pass to Marion. First down. Then 3 straight runs for another. Then a pass to Mali for 10 and another 1st…

So we have
2 pass plays for 18
3 for 10…

We are at the 34 with momentum…

Beck rush for 7 (designed)
Lyle rush for 2
Brown rush for -1

Settle for FG. We have the lead. Defense bends but doesn’t break, and they miss a FG. We have a chance to ice the game with the ball at their 25. 6 minutes left. We are moving the ball through the air, mostly down field on stops and digs.

Here are our plays the rest of the game…

1&10 Fletcher run for 5
2&3 Mali catch for 7
1&10 Beck run for 3 (scramble)
2 & 7 Fletcher run for 2
3 & 5 Marion 14 yard catch negated by penalty (McCoy)
3&10 False Start (Bell)
3&15 Marion catch for 16
1&10 Fletcher run for 3
TO SMU (2:28)
2&7 Trader reception for -1
TO SMU (2:23)
3&8 Incomplete pass + holding penalty
4&8 punt (2:09)

OT
1&10 Brown rush for 9
2&1 Brown rush for 5
1&10 Brown rush for 4
2&6 Brown Rush for 0
3&6 INT

So in the 4th quarter, we get 4 pass plays passed the LOS that goes for 40 yards. Not a math major, but a first down a throw.

The rest? 15 for 59 yards. We only threw the ball 5 times. Only once on 1st down… that produced another first down.

I think this is the issue. We are way more concerned with how we win than just winning. We were cutting them up to start the quarter. There is no reason to just go 3 straight runs after that. No reason to not throw to win against a defense that couldn’t generate pressure or really stop us through the air. It’s even worse in the red zone. This is a zoomed in version of the entire problem
Why are we deciding to do this? We had them on the ropes (other times too), and we just can’t help ourselves.

In the fourth quarter he stopped doing the spacing and 4 wr sets he did in the first quarter. He reverted to his BS preference and way too bauman in the 2nd half.

**** Dawson.
Is it Dawson? Is it just what “we” do? Why revert. I will mother **** Dawson to the sun for: his horrible use of the screen game and red zone offense, which is legit terrible. But we lack any semblance of strategic recognition. Why go to the screen when you know they will be geared up to stop run? Why get away from what is going to win you the game? It’s brutal

With all of our weapons, if you can’t carveit up in crunch time against the worst pass defense in CF, fuggedaboudit
We are mismatched philosophically. We are a way better passing and pass blocking operation than a running operation. We should be passing to set up the run. We should pass to win and use the run game as a change up. That’s why I mean I think we care more about how we win than just winning.

Marion was nails today. Had all day to pass against a secondary that sucks and didn’t exploit it more.

Jojo did his best Dee Wiggins impression at least

Seemed like every time we jumped out to a commanding 3 point lead Mario quickly retreated back to his safe space of over reliance on quick screens and anal-runs out of condensed sets. Guy watches us use a few new wrinkles to move the ball down the field a bit more consistently today only to predictably go back into his shell on 3rd/4th and short situations.

So many promising drives get halted because he constantly reverts back to his well known tendencies in crucial situations and gets his *** completely blown up. **** is absolutely maddening

Yes to all of this. In regulation, Beck was 26-36 for 274 yards 2tds and 1int (hit the receiver in the chest). If lofton and trader catch the ball he is 28-36 for over 300 with 3tds and no picks. He was on today.

Yep. As a team we rank 83rd in the country in yards per carry. Yet insist on that being our identity.

MC has destroyed this team's confidence. He does not believe in this team in high-leverage moments. You are spot on with MC's philosophy of trying to win games 24-21. Remember when you knew Coker, Shannon, Golden, Diaz, and Richt were not the guys?
I have the same feeling about Mario. It's just not going to work here. We need to start preparing for it. Recruiting has improved, but improved rosters should yield improved results. My heart breaks for Bain, CC, and everyone who bought in and came to UM despite programs like OSU, Ala, Ga...wanting them.
Again, you don't need the 2001 Canes to beat these teams.
