Advances in medicine and technology have led to the increased awareness not only in CTE but in many other areas of society. When I played optimist football, I took great pride as a rover safety in hitting an opponent as hard as possible - several times having to shake my head to get rid of the cob webs. We didn't know any better - or worse for that matter. The smoking and Nascar analogies are great examples of how knowledge and technology have increased safety in those respective arenas. Yes, we now are more keenly aware of the "risks" associated with playing the game we all love. Players at all levels are more aware of the risks and willingly accept those risks to participate in the game they love. Why not use all the knowledge, technology, and experience at our disposal to make the game safer? Another factor I believe contributes to this dilemma is that players are bigger, faster, and stronger than ever increasing the impact during a "hit". Sorry for being soo long winded!
