Former USF football standout Elkino Watson killed


Former USF defensive lineman Elkino Watson has died following an early-morning stabbing incident outside an Ybor City nightclub.

Police haven't confirmed the identity of the victim, but several former teammates were mourning Watson's death Sunday morning via Twitter.

"RIP Elkino Watson," tweeted Miami Booker T. Washington coach Tim Harris Jr., a Tornadoes assistant during Watson's all-state career at the south Florida prep powerhouse. "He was great young man from a great family. Sad to hear you were taken away from us all so soon."

Former Bulls DT Todd Chandler, a fellow Miami native, said in a direct message to the Tampa Bay Times that Watson "was a fun guy to be around."
"Everyone who knew Kino know what you were going to get from him," Chandler said. "A jokester, a big guy who could really dance, someone who you knew always had your back no matter what."

An initial media alert Sunday morning indicated police were investigating the stabbing of two victims in a parking lot at 1915 E. Seventh Ave., near The Orpheum nightclub. One of the victims later died at a hospital; the second suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The stabbings stemmed from a fight that started at 19th Street and Seventh Avenue. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers with anonymous tips and they will be eligible for a $3,000 reward.

Watson played in 44 games during his USF career, missing only three. As a senior in 2014, he recorded 36 tackles, including 7 1/2 for loss, with two sacks and a forced fumble.
