For those against 1st time coordinators

We have stuck out before because we had people like Shannon and Golden doing the hiring but everyone has to be given their 1st shot. Its like hearing the old adage we want a head coach with head coaching experience. That is so ignorant as most have already been fired at least once. Bruce Arians is a prime example, he kocked around for years as an OC was let go by Steelers and only lucked into being interim when Pagano came down with cancer. He showed what he was capable of and Arizona gave him a shot. 36-13 is a pretty good indication he was qualified but never given a chance. I hope they get a highly motivated position coach as a coordinator if he has proven at his position that he can coach.

Could I come down from Montana (or Coach Macho for that matter) and coordinate a Top 10 defense next year? Sure. I think most people would like more of a track record than rest an important decision like this one on the unknown.

Why is that so difficult to understand?

I'm not against first time coordinators. But I'm not going to be all aboard taking a guy as a first time DC just for the sake of getting a name. Especially considering the fact that Richt is an offensive coach and is planning on giving serious autonomy and authority to the DC.

We won a national championship in 2001 with 2 first time coordinators.

And 500 1st round NFL draft picks including 400 pro bowlers and 250 HOF prospects.

You and I could have run that team --You: "Kenny, call whatever the heck you want." Me: "Hey, Ed, get ready. Ken is about to score again." Okay, maybe we might have needed help on ST, unless you know something about that.

You're right. We could hire a first time coordinator who might flourish. Didn't Randy try that with Tim Walton, who had a good background? I'd feel a lot more comfortable hiring a guy who has had great success already especially now that we're paying competitive salaries.

I agree, at some point everyone needs their first opportunity. Some flourish, some fail and need to wait for another chance.

In Miami's case I would be comfortable with a first-time OC since Richt has an offensive background and will actually call plays. Richt could be a mentor to such a coach.

Ken Dorsey comes to mind for example, lacking of OC experience. Mark Richt as HC and calling plays, with Dorsey as Co-OC/Passing Game Coordinator and QB Coach, and Thomas Brown as Co-OC/Run Game Coordinator and RB Coach sounds reasonable.

I would not want a first-time DC since Richt's experience is not on that side of the equation. Richt has stated he won't micromanage the DC, so as much as I respect Michael Barrow I would not want him as DC.

In the shell-shock from the Golden era, lots of us feel the need to hire guys that have a proven track record. I don't think it matters that much, just put these guys in position to dominate. Give them a scheme that easy to understand and let them eat.

Seeing the success that Florida State has had under Jimbo Fisher when it comes to Defensive Coordinators is all the proof I need in this modern era of college football. ****, DJ Durkin was a first-time DC when he worked for Muschamp at Florida, today he's a head coach at Maryland. Just in case some idiot comes on my post railing how Florida sucked under Muschamp, remember it was the Florida Offense that was the raging tire fire.

As a result, if Mark Richt decides to name a position coach his Defensive Coordinator, then I'll trust his decision making.

True, but Muschamp had an extensive background as a DC. He recognized a talented coach and can take a chance on a first-time DC.

You guys conflate the argument of being explicitly FOR a non-experienced hire vs the chance that a non-experienced hire MIGHT work. I can understand the later, the former doesn't make much sense if the "budgetary constraints" are no more.

I don't think anyone is saying it's not possible for a first time DC to work out.
Sure...it's possible and it does happen but it's a 50/50 shot.
I think what we are saying is that at this moment in time for the university of Miami you need better than a 50/50 shot.
You need some sort of track record as a cordinator.

^^^^^Yes^^^^^
It's really that simple, like Franchise said, and this topic keeps coming up so here we go again. No one's saying that we "might" not get lucky with a position coach that excels as a DC but with us having money to spend and our program being on the down for a while, I don't think we can afford to chance that "might be great hire" if there's a proven, viable DC out there.

If I can do this in a 8A football with a bunch of small, slow white kids then I must be ready for the big time. Sign me up. Big Sky Cane and I will Co-DC this thang! The Franchise is my agent and will help me brand Beardy Ryan.

I ain't even askin' for much. A nice lil' 3 bedroom dig with a man cave and a yard for my 2 Dobermans, a 2015 GMC Yukon Denali, 5 pairs of Air Maxes (size 12), 7 v-neck t-shirts from the corner store, 5 pairs of cargo shorts and a gift certificate to Flanigans. :monkey-serious:

You too good for The Quarterdeck? Pass.

This!! We as a fan base don't want to wonder if our defensive coordinator is going to be good. After the last 5 years we want a sure thing. Especially since the guy will have complete control of the defense.
