For the Strong, Mario, Butch, & Schiano Crowd ...

I'm pretty clear in wanting an offensive HC for Miami. Mullen, Herman, Fuente, and Holgorsen are the guys I like. Chip Kelly and Hue Jackson are the pro guys I like. I was even on the Lane train for a while. And preferring an offensive guy is why I would even entertain Chud.

So, with that out of the way ...

Can you guys share who would be the preferred OC options to go with Strong, Mario, Butch, or Schiano?

None of those guys have demonstrated the ability to hire the right OC ...

So, what makes y'all think they would make the right hire at Miami?

And who are some reasonable options for the gig?

Note: The TCU guys are not coming here as OC, though Charlie might get 1 to come to Texas, if that guy doesn't get hired to replace Herman at Houston.

Seriously ... Who are some quality OCs we could steal???

And, full disclosure: I don't think Dorsey is an ideal OC to pair with a defensive minded HC ...

I think Dorsey would well.

But if I need to pick a guy that would do well right from the jump, I think Eddie Gran is the way to go.

Interesting choice.

Gran doesn't coach QBs, though. But I lik the way UC plays on offense.

I'm curious to see what NFL team hires Dorsey as OC. I suspect it will be an offensive HC.

I like the way he coaches offense and getting Moore up to speed as fast as he did and having him play almost flawless against Memphis tells me what I need to know about his preparation abilities.

His timely playcalling has impressed me too and I say that with throwing our abortion of a game out. 54 against Memphis and 30 against Houston are impressive numbers and the timelines of his decision is what I like.

Uptempo with a mix of spread and pro-style while recruiting big arm pro-QB's that he designs runs for to keep the defense honest? Sign me up. Plus Florida recruiting connections and a Miami connection through Tubberville? Sounds like the guy for the job.

Gran not coaching QB's is interesting to me and I wonder if that guy might be a fit down here as well.

I think Dorsey could do well from the jump at Miami as well. QB coach to college OC is the natural progression and Dorsey's success hinged on being smarter than the other guy and he taught Cam Newton how to read a NFL defense. That's a sign of his teaching skills. Plus recruiting wise his California connections and success down here would be critical. And in relation to Butch, it would come down to if he's willing to give Dorsey full control to be aggressive and active instead of conservative. That would be the end all question.

Franchise makes a good point with Kevin Wilson. I thought he coached circles around both Meyer's and Harbaugh's excellent defenses but he just came up short in the end.

Your coach Dana Holgerson is 23-24 over the last four years, and you want us to explain ourselves?

I'm positive you wouldn't understand.

My answer is simple. I trust Butch Davis to find the best possible OC available. The guy is dying to correct the biggest mistake he made in his coaching career when he left unfinished business at Miami. He knows more than me and anyone else on this message board about offensive coordinators across the country. Evaluating game films, traveling all over the country talking to coaching staffs and studying schemes as part of job as ESPN analyst.

Based on the fact that he worked with one of he coaching legends in both college and the pros (JJ), was the defensive coordinator of 2 Super Bowl teams in Dallas, has an eye for talent especially for the DT position, knows how to develop this talent and also being one of the best recruiters in college football: I know he will make Miami a very strong defensive team. Finding the right OC? I think he can do that easily.

Far be it from me to question Butch, but the biggest problem he's had offensively is a stubborn adherence to a conservative approach. I have no doubt that he's well-versed in today's game working for ESPN and watching as much college football as he does.

The only question when he's finally formally announced as HC is whether or not he'll insist on sticking with that ultra-conservative, ineffective offense he's shown a proclivity to.

I understand your concern and it is a valid one. However, no one understand Miami fans and the expectations they have more than Butch Davis. Can we at least agree on this one? Knowing the high expectations of the fans, the media and the outspoken Hurricanes alums don't you think he is well aware that his offensive production will be heavily scrutinized? It is not Chapel Hill anymore. It is South Florida where the beach, the girls, the boating and fishing will take the fans away from SLS if there is no excitement on the field.

Butch Davis will be in the pressure cooker and he is well aware of it. Featuring a conservative, boring and uninspiring offense not only will put pressure on his defense but more importantly won't help bring the fans back to a currently empty stadium. Something he is brought here to do.

What's with the constant Holgorsen love affair?

IMO, he's not any worse than Strong or Cristobal ... And both of them have been linked to the job.

If the other guys are out of reach, I'd take Holgorsen over Strong and Cristobal.

I think what Holgorsen did against Clemson is more impressive than what Strong did against Florida or Miami.

He'd obviously be behind Mullen and Herman, though.

Why in ***** sake would anyone ever consider any of those brokedick coaches when Butch is available?

You answered your own question.

Butch Davis Da Gawd kept John Shoop around for 4 years.

Why?

I don't know the answer to this question and honestly I don't care to know.
What I know is, NC football is not Miami football. Different football history, different championships tradition, different access to talent, different fans expectations, different albums expectations and it is in a different time in history. This time around, Butch Davis will be in MIAMI! A school with rich tradition and very high expectations where the stadium has been empty and the fans are hungry for success. This time he is here to prove something. This time he is more knowledgable about the changes in the game and the new offensive and defensive schemes. This time he has more connections and access to assistants considering he was touring the country and talking to OC's.

Maybe he was stubborn in NC or was out to prove his choice was right, I don't know. To expect that he will have the same "poor choice" in OC this time around is reaching and grasping at straws. Which you keep doing over and over again.
Straws.webp

Butch would need to bring in a GOOD OC. A little flash & dash is what brings the fans out. Who would it possibly be?

He was in Miami once before and stuck with a boring pedestrian offense and a mediocre OC until he managed to out talent most teams his final season. Prior to that, fans were revolting against Coker for years.

Butch is a stubborn guy. I just hope he's learned from past mistakes with his bad offenses over the years. I also hope he's realized how much college football has changed especially offensively since he coached here because I think he's already been quietly given the job by AD Dimare.

DUDE, again you make TOO MUCH SENSE!! I see why, some of these posters hate you!! LOL

Butch Davis Da Gawd kept John Shoop around for 4 years.

Why?

To prove that he could consistently whip UM's *** with a no-talent coordinator.

What about NC St. and UVA?

Read my reply again.

You'll note Saban, Miles, EVERYONE has suffered inexplicable losses to teams that they should NOT have lost to.

Why you cherry-picking?

Cause that's all he's got to work with. It's pretty enlightening when the best he can come up with are out of context cherry picked stats.

I love Butch Davis.

Some risk will be taken in the new hire unless you are getting one of the big proven names countlessly mentioned here. There will be some risk that a hot rising star in a lower division like Herman may not have the same success in the big boys league. There is a small risk that Butch may have not learned anything during his years away from football and has not moved away from him conservative offense. To me, it is a small risk well worth taking.
