First of all, people need to understand how big of a joke Memphis football is. They are less than an afterthought. The Missisippi Delta region is dominated by Ole Miss, LSU and the rest of the SEC.
Memphis' record in the 3 years before Fuente took over was 5-31.
First year there, with crap talent, he went 4-8, and ended the season on a 3 game winning streak. So, in Year 1 he won more games than the previous 2 combined, with the predecessor's talent. And, I know this is weird as a Miami fan, but he also ended the year on a positive note.
As most coaches at reclamation projects do, he took a step back in year 2, and then in year 3 (you know, the year when new coaches make a statement about how good they are) he went 10-3 and took a share of the conference title. Yes, it is a bad conference, but he had bad talent and he WON. And then he won a bowl game. Double digit wins and a bowl win with inferior talent. Al Golden couldn't carry this dude's jock.
Last season, the critical year 3, he gave UCLA everything they could handle on the road. His losses were to UCLA and Ole Miss on the road (both in the Top 10 at the time), and at home by 4 points to Houston -- who won 9 games on the year.
In Year 4, with all of his own guys, he is 5-0
As for the "very skilled QB", Fuente found Lynch up in Deltona and convinced him to come to Memphis when no one but FAMU wanted him. He has developed him in to guy that NFL scouts are taking a long look at.
ALL OF THIS is they type of stuff you want to hear about a good coach, not to mention that his mentor is the guy coaching the #2 team in college football right now.
Pretty **** good candidate in my eyes, although probably not #1 on my list.
