Florida Approves Open Division for Top 8 Teams (All HS Sports)

If I’m reading this correctly, this doesn’t takeaway from traditional state championship classification brackets. In every other sport except football, I’d say this is a good idea because the risk is minimal and the competition could be pivotal for extra player development or collegiate opportunities.

Football offers those benefits too; however, the injury/pain risk is far greater. 3 extra games is A LOT to understate it, and so many of these top athletes are already trying to catch up to speed with winter sports that are ongoing while fall finishes up.

Moreover, state champions are often decided in the first few weeks of December. Add three weeks to that period and you begin to mess with Christmas/New Year’s/family time, the select few trying to play in all-star games which now includes elite juniors, and the broader bunch of any D1 senior who plans on graduating early for spring enrollment.
 
good lord…..their computer model would’ve excluded 14-1 STA (who lost to Mater Dei 26-23 to start the season) from their top eight teams in the state of Florida.

This doesn’t even make sense to me. They say the list above would’ve been the top eight teams via maxpreps at the end of the regular season; and the list below are the top eight teams after states.

So STA wins states including a 29-0 championship game victory and they aren’t included in the top eight teams?

Great point about the timing for guys looking to enroll early.

I would hope they factored that in.. if not you could have a bunch of guys skipping those games
 
This needs to be a regular thing if you have a public and private division. Enough with the participation trophies.

To add to this insanity, they rolled out, “No humans involved. Straight computers!” Like weird flex but okay.

DeLand went 12-1, lost to Lake Mary in the playoffs, and Lake Mary lost to Vero Beach in the state title game. What type of 🐂 💩 do you have to somehow rank DeLand as the number one seed lmfao

MAXpreps is the worst possible option for this.
 
I’m thinking the Open Division playoffs would run concurrent to playoffs in the “traditional” classifications — and with just 8 teams/3 rounds, the open division would actually get done earlier than the rest.

That method would’t extend high school football season at all

The Villages has a Charter school? Is anyone under 55 even allowed to live in The Villages?

This is correct. It’s not in addition to the regular state titles. Those 8 teams are removed from the bracket in their classifications.
