...and it was depressing. My arrival to law school at The U coincided with Butch's arrival to the program and I had actually somewhat forgotten how difficult things were in the beginning. I won't launch into an analysis of why the program is where it's at but things were never the same after Ohio State and Randy Phillips' attitude and missive during the documentary serve as the perfect examples for why we failed for so long.

In any event, watching the documentary, at first, I was struck by the similarities between Butch's and Al's inheritance of the program. However, by the end of the film, the differences between the two were more clear than ever. Here are my two main examples:

(1) Butch never made excuses--he was working with extremely limited schollys after sanctions so he brought in a sports psychologist to help identify guys that were leaders and could make a difference; he made the most of those limited roster spots and brought in guys with heart, pride and courage--guys who thrived on motivating others; ****, Ed Reed reiterated that the players mainly ran the practices under Butch's watchful eye. Those guys were scared to under-perform and have to face their teammates. Along these same lines, those players/leaders made sure to handle team business within the team and excelled because of their pride in both themselves and this university.

(2) At first, Al looked like he had all the makings to be Butch, Jr., but like his predecessors, i.e. Randy and Coker, ended up failing in the evaluation and motivation departments, leaving us with some talented kids who lacked the intangibles that Butch was able to see in kids. From what I've read and seen Kaaya and Chad Thomas may fit that old mold, but absent them, sadly, it looks like we are stuck in a leadership void from both the player and coaching perspectives. Things will never change here until that leadership void is fixed.

Personally, I thought Al was the guy for the job--and, like many of us, I too was fooled by the polished one-liners and the slicked-back hair. I was done with Al after last winter's Penn State flirtation. I know it will never happen, and I know it's not even worth mentioning it...but a guy can hope--bring back Butch and go 'Canes!

First half was great, second half was the Nevin Shapiro show, it sucked

That is because the first half was Butch's U and the second half was Donna's U. I went into the show preferring Chud or Greg to Butch(hoping either would bring him on as DC and recruiting Czar). By the end of the show, I was convince that Butch was only one who can save the program. He is the only one with the blueprint for rebuilding The U from ashes. Dennis gave us two HCs but left blaming heap. Only Butch has the cred to have any chance to overcome the loss of the OB. His instant impact on recruiting after this show cannot be matched by any program or coach right now. Only Butch has a chance to stand toe to toe with Saban without bagmen and facilities and send him back to Bama in tears. Clearly his assistant coaching tree is on a level with JJ. After The U 2, Butch in the only new coach I want. Any other is higher risk and less cost efficient.

I haven't even watched yet, but I'm ready for Butch Davis more than I can remember. I was ****ed when he left for Cleveland back then but he seems to realize that was a huge mistake on his part. If he had stayed, we might have 2 or 3 more titles to the Canes legacy. Time for him to come and pick up where he left off.

I've been a proponent for Butch for a long time now.

I was nauseous when Schnellenberger announced he was leaving, furious when JJ said he was leaving, puked out when the scandals occurred, and highly ****ed when Butch left. We were on a roll.

Let's get back to our roots, get our South Florida football back, and let Butch build the team back up to annual contenders.

He's hungry, and we're starving.

If by some act of God Golden gets fired, and UM doesn't hire Butch, there will be rioting.

It's crazy how much support Butch Davis has by our fanbase at this moment.

Watch it! Just turn it off before the Taint game.

It certainly is crazy. While he's light years better than we've had the last decade, I'm greedy and want more.

I know it's a big besides, but what has Butch done that's so impressive besides build our program back up with one of the most talented teams of all time if not ever? He had a lot of talent at UNC, but failed to do much of anything with it.

I would be okay with him coming back, but my initial opinion is no thanks as I want a sharp X's and O's guy. Should we get him back, I think we'd have our very own John Cooper.

You really can't say he failed to do much at UNC when most of those guys got suspended or were young. A bunch of preseason potential first rounders suspended (up to 8 at one point I think) and 13 starters I believe were suspended. Gio Bernard was a freshman and was injured before the season started. That year UNC still went 8-5 (only 1 game less than Al Golden's best year while Golden never faced anything close to that bad in terms of his depth chart). They should have beat LSU and took the game to a final pass in the end zone (and there was a no call pass interference by LSU). The only bad loss in their 5 was NC ST who still had Russell Wilson (so it wasn't that bad) and maybe GT who was still a solid team. You give him his full squad that year and UNC might have made a title run.

Seriously? It what universe is John Cooper on a plane with dude who built such a team that Larry Frigging Coker went undefeated two seasons in a row, won one NC, and got cheated out of another? Butch might had needed some game day coaching polish but please. JJ choked in two NC games, got beat by the same frigging defensive scheme Al is running in both, and lost three bowl game in a row before he figured out how to coach one. Butch might fail, but he is our best hope at this moment.

Mark this down: Butch is the only guy out there who could troll South Florida of the best talent, turn them into NFL Prospects, and walk them into Tuscaloosa, Alabama on a Saturday afternoon and make Nick Saban his B***h.

Not only would a Butch-led Canes team beat Bama, they'd beat FSU and Notre Dame. He's the only coach who could get his Canes team to go into South Bend, beat the Irish, and come back to the Gables with their goalposts as trophies.

Although I will admit, Butch would need a little time to coach the "Temple" out of this team.

Still havent watched it. I cant watch it and face the reality of what Miami is today

I don't know what will be more infuriorating...keeping Gordlens after we get blown out in the bowl game, or them firing him finally and then not hiring Butch.

Simple, both can assemble talent (with help from assistants and Butch had some good ones here) but can't win with it. Butch's best record ever is what? His career record is what? Cooper destroys him in both categories and yes, Butch maybe could get to those kinds of yearly records and had some obstacles along the way (big obstacle, our probation) but he hasn't yet.

The main reason I toss those two together though is Cooper couldn't seem to beat Michigan, the big game basically. That would be Butch here, substitute FSU or any other big game. He's just not that good of a game day coach, never has been.

Don't listen to the troll. He spends his entire existence posting things that are counterintuitive to what any Cane fan would post, b/c he's from some KKK village in Indiana and a Notre Dame fan.

LOL apparently the year 2000 passed you by. Jesus get this ******* obvious non-Canes fan off these boards.

Yes, we were screwed out of the title game due to computer rankings, but did he not crap the bed against a team from the NW.

P.s. That same NW team had as much of a case as we did that year, but hardly anyone ever says as much. You done following me around yet? It's laughably absurd at this point.
