For the 13th time in program history, and the first since 2016, the Miami Hurricanes are headed back to the NCAA Super Regionals after edging top-seeded Southern Miss, 5-4, in a thrilling winner-take-all contest Monday night at Pete Taylor Park.

Right-hander Will Smith (3-0) earned the win after tossing three innings of one-run ball in relief, striking out four and allowing just one hit. Starter Reese Lumpkin allowed one run across 3 1/3 innings, while Rob Evans and Walters combined to...

I'm not saying I am a baseball expert but I do know a lot about the game and played some college ball as a catcher. The head coach JD almost lost that game for his players. Smith was pitching just fine got into a little jam but it was obvious the So Miss players were having major problems hitting him. Evans was a disaster and right away it was obvious he was struggling with throwing strikes. He got bailed out a few times with batters swinging at some very bad balls. JD should never put him in and second of all removed Smith too early. I hope he learns his lessons because it was so obvious JD made the wrong decision with Evans then compounded the problem leaving him in too long. In my opinion it was a great victory but the star of the game was Smith with Walters close by. You can't have RF bat .247 and strike out 4 times. I hope there is a replacement for Peralta. Go Canes against Louisville.

I agree Smith looked good throwing gas, pulled too early

Aside from one bad inning on Sunday night, the Canes dominated some really good teams in this tournament (Bama and USM).

He really wants to play matchups and SoMiss had like 6 lefties in the lineup. Doesn’t matter when you can’t throw strikes. And…pretty sure I heard the broadcasters say that he had reverse splits…so even more head scratching. Def been the rule and not the exception, though

I’m really proud of this team and I congratulate them for making a super regional. I’ve been clear, I do not believe in JD, but I have to give him his props, he’s made a super regional. Let’s see if he can now guide this team to Omaha. If he does that, he’ll start making a believer out of me.

Not disagreeing with you at all but my point is that Smith was overpowering the So Miss batters nd they hade massive problems with his pitches and variety. JD took him too early and left Evans in way too late. That is my point and I'm sticking 100% behind that. Also, he left Evans in one batter too late and it burned us. IT DOES MATTER THAT YOU THROW STRIKES BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT A RELIEF PITCHER IS SUPPOSE TO DO. It is not his mission to throw a plethora of balls and walk batters which Evans did. lol my goodness

No I agree with you 100%. I was commenting on what I think he was trying to do, which imo was the wrong thing. Smith was dealing. They had no answer and he decided to get match up happy and almost cost us
