Watching the Miami Hurricanes play for Jai Lucas has been quite enjoyable, to say the least. Today, we have another opportunity to see them in action as Bethune-Cookman travels to Coral Gables for a 7 PM EST tip-off at the Watsco Center.

You may not have marked this game on your calendar when you first saw the schedule, especially with a big time game against the Florida Gators approaching. However, the Hurricanes should not look too far ahead, as Bethune-Cookman recently suffered a tight...

Miami Basketball will welcome a new opponent to the Watsco Center on Thursday for the Hurricanes’ second game of the Jai Lucas era. Game 2 of Miami’s 2025-26 regular season is against Bethune-Cookman from the SWAC, an experienced team that has already played one game.

0-1 this season

The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman are 0-1, but it's unlikely the host Miami Hurricanes will underestimate them on Thursday night.

This caution is warranted because the Wildcats 0-1 gave a strong game to the No. 20 Auburn Tigers on Monday night. Auburn ultimately won that game 95-90 in overtime during the season opener for both teams.

Therefore, the Miami team could be on upset alert against the Wildcats if they don't come prepared.

Heady and Morris lead Bethune-Cookman's squad

In Bethune-Cookman's loss to the Auburn Tigers, the Wildcats had eight players logging double-digit minutes, including leading scorers Quentin Heady with 21 points and Arterio Morris, who contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Heady was a standout last season for Central Michigan, averaging 15.0 points per game. Morris faced challenges at Texas and Kansas due to an assault case. He has not played a college game since Texas' NCAA Tournament regional final loss to Miami.

Picked first in the SWAC

The panel that evaluated Heady and Morris also voted the Wildcats first in the SWAC’s Preseason Poll. The Wildcats received 232 points, finishing 18 points ahead of second-place Southern University.

  1. Bethune-Cookman- 232 (12)
  2. Southern- 214 (5)
  3. Jackson State- 208 (1)
  4. Alabama State- 183 (3)
  5. Texas Southern- 182
  6. Alabama A&M- 163
  7. Grambling State- 151
  8. Florida A&M- 115
  9. Prairie View A&M- 99
  10. Alcorn State- 74
  11. Arkansas-Pine Bluff- 70 (1)
  12. Mississippi Valley State- 25
All Time Series

Miami leads the all-time series vs. Bethune Cookman 6-0 including a 5-0 record in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes most recently took on then Wildcats in 2018-19 — a 78-70 win at the Watsco Center.

BCU is a talented and experienced team that could pose problems for our boys tonight, particularly if they shoot the ball the way they did against Auburn the other night. Our guards will have their hands full tonight, but I expect us to pull away because of our advantage on the inside. I expect Reneau and Udeh to play vital roles for us in the victory. GO CANES!!!

As you say, B-C shot well, hitting 12-22 threes. Not sure we can come close to matching that shooting. Auburn outrebounded them 40-33.

Miami men’s basketball rolled to a 101-61 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Thursday night inside the Watsco Center.

Behind a 17-point first half performance from Tre Donaldson, the Hurricanes held a 50-31 lead at the break.

Miami (2-0) opened the game on a 7-0 run, making their first four shots forcing Bethune-Cookman (0-2) to call a timeout. The Wildcats cut lead to three before Hurricanes went ahead 24-15 behind Dante Allen’s first career bucket followed by his first career three. Following a pair of free throws from Bethune-Cookman to trim the lead to 42-31, Miami closed out the half on an 8-0 run.

In the first half, the Hurricanes shot 19-of-26 (73.1%) from the floor, marking the first time had 70 percent-or-better from the floor since shooting 71.4-percent against Presbyterian on Dec. 15, 2024.

Miami kept its foot on the gas to start the second half, opening the final stanza on a 15-4 run to take a 65-35 lead. After the Wildcats cut the lead to 22 at 69-47, the Hurricanes went on a 11-0 run to take a 33-point lead.

Miami dominated the paint, outscoring the Wildcats 58-26 while finishing the game 39-of-66 (59.1%) from the floor. Offensively, Miami registered 25 assists to just six turnovers.

Miami closes out its three-game homestand at the Watsco Center on Monday at 7 p.m. The game can be seen nationally on the ACC Network.

Another day, another win for the Canes inside the Watsco Center, two for two for Jai Lucas to open the season. CIS’s tradition of immediately following the game continues, as Peter Ariz sets up inside his household to recap the game.

Tre Donaldson caught fire, Malik Reneau keeps doing his thing, and that Dante Allen guy is pretty good, too.

2-0. Go Canes.

Any news on Maddox and Dovrat? Will they redshirt, are they injured? Curious when we could expect to see them. Thanks
Maddox is 100% a redshirt candidate. Dovrat was a fairly late signee (late July) so probably still easing into things. Wouldn't shock me if he redshirts as well.

Appreciate it. Seems like he could be a steal. I believe both him and Allen are coaches sons. That’s always helpful having a great basketball IQ

But but but, I was warned that Bethune-Cookman ALMOST gave Auburn the business.

The Gator just had a 40-point win too, but I ain't scared. Can't wait for that game! Drove to Gainesville my freshman year to see the UM-UF football game. Drove to Gainesville my sophomore year to see the UM-UF basketball game.

The Gator is still my most-hated rivalry.

That UF game should be fun. They’re obviously uber talented, It’ll be a good measuring stick.
That's what we said when we played Kentucky at Rupp two years ago. They routed us and we were never the same after being exposed like that. And KY was only ranked #20 at the time.
