Did I miss something or was DJ Dallas safe catching punts inside our 10?
I realize on kickoffs now they have a new rule where if you safe catch it at anything less than the 25 yard line the ball gets placed on the 25 yard line. But that does not apply to punts.
I was always coached, even in college, that you let the ball bounce if it is gonna land inside the 10. Even if there are players waiting to down it. The special teams coach said most punts roll at least 10 yards and you had a good chance to get the ball at the 25. Our guys seem to fair catch it no matter where the punt lands. Not sure if they are being coached to do that or are just idiots.
Maybe I'm missing something?

Makes sense to let it bounce. Best case you get the ball on the 9, worst case you give up 6.

Heels on the 10. If it's going over your head, get the **** out of there so a weird bounce doesn't hit you.

Easier said than done. In the heat of the moment, guys are tempted to back up a little. It's human nature to want to catch the ball.

He actually did it twice and all I could muster was WTF is he doing?

Three things you can't count on for our "special" teams, every kickoff must be run directly into the tangle of bodies in front of the returner, we'll almost get at least two punts blocked per game, we'll field every punt inside the 10...preferable fair caught.

That is exactly what I was taught. And you make the fair catch signal as you are running up to try and confuse the other team even more that you are trying to catch it at the 20 when the ball is gonna land inside the 10 and hopefully roll into the end zone. It is a showmanship game that good special teamers can do really well.

and it still isnt as embarrassing as his explanation for picking up the ball as it went out of bounds in the VA game

If there’s 2-3 opposing players ready to cover the ball in case he lets it bounce I don’t mind fielding it at the 8 or 9 because odds are they’ll cover it even deeper (near the goal line)
