I'm somewhat of an expert on the subject, so here's my two cents.
None of the punters on the roster are any good, neither are the ones being recruited.
Hartley knew he didn't have a good one on the roster. His fix, which was the correct idea, was to rugby punt everything and hope to **** one of them hit a guy on the punt return unit. It worked out better than straight up punting.
Punting at Miami requires a **** good punter. You cannot rely on the walkon program like other universities. You need a stud from day one. Miami has had studs for a long time, as fans, we are used to it.
Miami's coverage units are always going to be above average. You need someone who can just flat out boom the ball. Directional kicking doesn't matter much (Feagles Sr. had a great NFL career on directional punting, college game is a different story).
For the upcoming season, Miami should stick with Spicer doing rugby punts.
They need to get a blue chip punter with a HUGE leg.
In punting, half the punts are against a short field, meaning their own 45yd line and in (55yds or shorter to opposing goal line).
Otherwise, BOOM THE **** OUT OF THE BALL. Against a 1 returner return, just kick it where he isn't hangtime matters less than distance. **** hang time and a good roll=GG!!! If you can boom it over his head, go for it.
Spicer doesn't have a booming leg like Bosher, Botts, Vogel, or O'Donnell, so he should keep doing the Rugbys.
