Fastest Cane 40yds/100yds...What say you??

Look it up . At a state sanctioned football combine in Ft. Myers back in 92 or 93 its reported that three seperate coaches clocked him at 4.15 - 4.16 and 4.19

Better yet. If you know him ask him.

Dude was fast.

Go Canes!!
Drives fast AF too. Remember after he got his NFL money the police chasing him in his new Jag doing over 100 down a glorified 2 lane MLK blvd. (Anderson Ave back then) No charges filed.

Interesting thread.

Two of the fastest guys mentioned (Shipman & DVD) certainly weren't big time players at UM. Shipman wasn't even close to being a starter. DVD was a starter, but would be waaaaaaay down the list of great UM CBs. I can still see him giving up that game-losing TD vs UNC in 2008.

Speedsters like Santana, Hester, Thrill Hill had a huge impact on the team's performance with their big plays AND were incredibly fast. Travis Benjamin would maybe get close to that group. Daryl Jones would be in the second tier. Great speed, but was more of a role player and contributor rather than being one of the key guys on the team.

Eddie Brown seems to have been forgotten in this discussion. (Maybe because a lot of posters weren't around when he played, I don't know).

Like someone else said, there's speed and then there is football speed. Football speed doesn't always show up on the stopwatch or at the meets and combines. But it shows up on the field. Some guys are just so quick and elusive that nobody can lay a hand on them in space.

One more thing...

I seem to remember that when Jimmy Johnson took over he said Melvin Bratton was the fastest guy on the team. And that was in an offense that included Eddie Brown and Brian Blades. (This was before Bratton bulked up, of course). Anybody else remember that?

Faster than Brian Blades??....No way...Blades had World Class Speed....That's why Deion covered Blades in 86 and 87....

Agree that Blades was faster than Brown, but “world class speed”? Now, there’s a phrase that’s overused to describe football players. On today’s rubberized carpets...I think Blades would’ve run 10.35-10.45 (I want to say he ran 9.4 at the county meet; 9.5 in the prelims of districts and then false started the finals his senior year). And that’s close, especially in high school. But, it’s not “world class”

If you’re talking about the 100m, to me...
World Class < 10.15 (in the 80’s...world class was probably a full tenth slower, maybe more)
National Class < 10.30
Look.....Brian Blades had 100 meter World Class Speed....Thats 100% fact....His Brother Bennie had World Class Speed in the 400....was an Olympic Invitee....There is NO denying the facts I presented....

If you’re talking “world class” for an under-20 athlete, then maybe - and the same would go for Bennie - but “world class”, to me, is everyone/open. Neither would qualify.
Bennie was invited to the Olympics....Stop it....and for the last time...Brian Blades DID have World Class Speed....No way on earth was Bratton EVER faster than BB....

The first time I heard "IF HE'S EVEN HE'S LEAVING" was Jammi , but nothing sticks in my mind of him doing it ,I mean a game breaking play that sticks with you.

But yes Ninja motorcycle top end speed no doubt.

GOCANES

1. Bennie was NOT invited to the Olympics; now if you mean the US Olympic trials (which I think you do) then possibly. But a trials invite doesn’t make you world class and that’s the point I’m making. 46.6 was not World Class in 1984.
2. Brian did NOT have “world class” speed. 9.4 was not world class in 1984. Maybe national class, not world class.
3. I never commented on Bratton.
In 1984??....What was his times in 86 and 87??

.No way on earth was Bratton EVER faster than BB....

I didn't say he was. I said I remembered Jimmy Johnson saying Bratton was the fastest guy on the team back in '84. It was something that was stated on the radio or TV at the time. I simply asked if anyone else who was around at that time remembered hearing it, too. It didn't make sense to me at the time, but if JJ actually said it, then...

ddann....It's all good....I'm just amazed that JJ would say that....There were ALOT of Faster Canes than Melvin in those Mid 80s teams....

Tory Mitchell is the answer for the 100 if you want to count him.

Daryl Jones was an actual Big East 55m champion (x1) and 100m champion (x2). It was said that Santana would nose him out in the shorter races in practices.

"Santana's better in the shorter stuff, in the 40, 50 meters," track coach Mike Ward said. "Daryl in the 100 meters, he's by far the top kid that's come through here."
It was a shame about Tory Mitchell. He came to Miami with world class potential. I think he had a wind-aided 10.23 or something like that. In HS. He left Miami in world-class speed, too. Gone in a flash for Texas Tech and obscurity. About ten or so years ago he was murdered in Texas. Never had that great track career.

Eddie Brown was pretty fast. Alex Johnson apparently had a HS 100 yards of under 9.5. For 100 yards that was flying. Two other very athletic and fast guys were Rocky Belk (thru '82) and Laurence Thompson (who apparently was a great high jumper but never, got into football games.) Our '83-'84 teams were not that fast. Neither was our '88 secondary. We were generally not as fast as people think we were in the early part of our run. In '84 that UF RB Lorenzo something broke a long one on us and JJ was frustrated at our lack of speed on defense. Nobody was close to him. Looked it up, it was Lorenzo Hampton.
