F^ck Around and Find Out - Encouraging Signs, But Overwhelmingly Concerning Performance

Looked like a manny defense!
People described it as a manny defense with guard rails. Some teams figure out a way to manipulate those guard rails

Either way our fanbase champions players and coaches way too soon. Manny literally had the #1 defense in 17, two years later we all said teams got film on it and it became suspect. We just have to see how guidry improves throughout his time here, good thing is i don’t think talent gets worse as times goes on like it did with manny

Like someone has already stated,

1. Be more creative in the run game like the Canes did in the second half on Friday.

2. Run more stretch and zone plays. The backs you need are there to do it. Stop trying to show teams how big your balls are by running into the teeth of the defense every run play.

3. You CANNOT turn the ball over 3 times and not expect to pay.

4. The secondary is a big concern. But, we knew that. Need pressure consistently.

5. It seems that any mobile QB gives EVERY team in college football fits. It’s not just the Canes. Play more disciplined football and tackle better when you have the opportunity.

6. Take every game one week at a time. If the boys do what they’re supposed to do, they’d be fine. Leave the twitter wars alone and focus on the task at hand. These are kids and they are fickle.

7. Keep them focused Mario from week to week. Just like fans get ahead of themselves, kids do the exact same thing. One week, one game, and one play at a time.

The biggest problem with our run game is the fact that we predictably call the same run up the gut plays from condense bunch formations

Spread them out!!!!!!

I know this is not gonna be popular, but number one on defense is a liability Past place doesn’t seem to wrap up and it’s awful in space.

Along with trying to get the best quarterback in a portal, we definitely need a portal best linebacker that money can buy because if number one is the best we got then it’s gonna be a long next season at linebacker.

One more thing regarding the running game. how big is run have come from the perimeter.

Having talented RBs and making them run in the system that has been called some far this season is doing them a disservice.

Martinez didn’t forget how to run the ball and make big plays
Ajay Allen deserves more carrie
CJ Jr should be getting tosses, jets, reverses, tunnels

Dawson has to figure something out
I believe Mario has influenced over the run plays called

Dawson is not a good signal caller in my opinion. We have way too much talent and EVERY PLAY we should be attacking and rotaing players. I think he is a second rate play caller and that's saying it mildly.

something that has gotten lost is the fact Cam is changing ALOT of plays..... Are they are changes for the good? Hard for the fan base to know that without knowing what the original play call was.....

Under Mario, we’re running the same exact run plays from the his first OC at Miami

Run plays are all Brofense

People NEED to realize.

The running game is being executed the way it's designed to be executed.

The offensive line has very tight splits already, and there's almost always tightends in tight.

On top of that, they motion extra guys in tight too.

It's designed to just have the RB try to make something happen through 15 to 16 bodies. Very stupid.

As long as Mario and Mirabal are here, its not going to change so there's no point hoping that it changes. It's their style.
This.

Shannon Dawson is our OC and he’s an Air Raid guy but there’s nothing in the run game that resembles an Air Raid style. Our head coach and his mini me insist that the ONLY way to run the ball in between the tackles and it doesn’t count unless you literally tell the offense “hey we’re running it right up the middle”. This is tuff and fízical football. Running a toss to get your running back in space isn’t. Spreading your receivers out as wide as possible to create space to run isn’t. Keeping everyone as tight as possible and then asking your 230 lb running back to squeeze through the one inch of space between the center and guard’s thighs is the ONLY way to run the football.

Manny never had the number 1 defense but his best defense was in 2018. The 2017 defense was 39th in total defense and 28th in scoring defense. They did fall apart in 2020 but that was more about poor recruiting than teams figuring anything out. He went to Penn State and all of the sudden his defense was great again. His defense is usually good when he has good players but you could say that about most coaches.

Point blank, we need to do better on the coaching front. They opened up the checkbook to buy wins, but you aren't going to win things on talent alone. A neutral observer to this game with roster costs known would've said we overpaid big time. Staff costs, same thing would be said.

We can all point to little things we think we need to improve on, but it all starts at the top. Do better, everyone do better.

Additionally, the bottom line here is that imagine if we had TVD at QB.

Does the team look any different than last year with TVD at QB? No, not at all.

There's something very hard to put into words about the situation but it seems as if the team has a limiter on it, like an engine would.

Everything we're seeing is Cam Ward.

This. This. This. It’s not the linemen.

Believe me, with the right scheme Carpenter Cooper and Cici are enough to run behind.

obviously we we were feeling ourselves and cam had 3 turnovers so I'm not downplaying any concerns

BUT

they don't call that holding call on markell bell and we go up 21-7, then none of this is true and we win by 4 td's easily

i truly believe that

Many posts, including the first one lays out our weaknesses that VT took advantage of.

This Team is good but not yet Elite. Examples as others have said. In watching Bama and Georgia last night.. Plus Ohio State a few weeks ago, our depth and talent in several positions needs to come up. We knew this, and just keep stacking classes. Develope the recruits also.

Frankly, Cam had an ok game at best. He did some late game heroics, but also had some really bad turnovers. We are going to only go as far as he plays. He better start getting the ball out sooner, or the sacks will be rising. And he won't have a long pro career either if this doesn't change.

Enjoy what we have, I don't see us winning out the season, and thought we would go 10-2 before the season started. Still a big improvement, but prepare for the fact we may not make the ACCCG. Is 1 loss in the Coastal going to do it....And this is not about being a mope, it's just reality based on teams adjusting now. Still much better than last year and hopefully we end the season ranked.

Now Canes go beat Cal dammit! I am flying out to the game with a crew.

We’ve had the easiest schedule of any top 10 team IMO. Florida is one of the worst teams in the SEC, FAMU, Ball State just lost to James Madison 63-7, USF just lost to Tulane 45-10. VTech might actually have been the toughest opponent so far. There are now 5 games worth of tape on us and this middle stretch of the season will be really telling. Coach Guidry talked about some of his thoughts on half-time adjustments last week and how coach’s make their money by fixing issues on the fly in-game - well that didn’t go so well. Before the season I didn’t think much of the Cal game, but coming off a shaky performance, traveling to the other side of the country against an opponent who will view us as their Super Bowl has my attention. How will the players and coaches respond and adjust? If this game is a nail-biter I will officially be concerned.

There isn’t that much we can do about some of the personnel limitations unless a bunch of the young guys make big jumps in development and take a chunk of snaps away from some of the remaining JAGs on the roster. This is where the coaches make their bread, how will they work around our issues?

Oh i thought 17 was #1 maybe it fell off late but i always thought that 2018 year was overrated by the numbers 2017 was much better

They have been trying to play porter at nickel this year and he seems to be better outside. In the 4th they finally put him back outside and had Richard playing nickel
not sure that change is good, richard is our worse DB. he is picked on repeatedly because of it.

Won’t necessarily disagree, I just don’t think Fletcher has as much wiggle as people think. Difference of opinion but again, agree on the style of running Martinez displays.

One thing I forgot to add in my OP: if we want to get creative with our running game, we need to get CJ24 the ball. He’s electric in open space, I know we tried the wheel route earlier that was sort of forced, but more of CJ, the better.
i looked at each run play and the problems IMO were as follows

1. no push. so many times we couldn't move defenders past the line of scrimmage and the first contact with the RB came at the line of scrimmage
2. no creativity. none. enough said.
3. bad vision. both martinez and fletcher run into traffic rather than other areas where they can get a couple at least
4. stacked boxes. we run against stacked boxes frequently. somehow Cam must have the authority to get out of the run and throw the ball, even if for a short gain.
5. i yelled the entire game that we needed Lyle, Johnson and Allen in the game. they have more wiggle,. speed and can run on the outside. martinez and fletcher, not so much
