Scholarship limits began in 1973 mostly to free up money for woman sports following the passage of Title IX. The NCAA set the initial limit at 105. Scholarship limits were further reduced in 1978 to 95. The current limit (85) was established in 1992. We began our legacy under the 95 roster limits and our resurgence after sanctions under the 85 limit. Nothing has materially changed since 1973. Attached is a link if you are interested. When you look at the formula we used, we basically transformed the sport at this level. Then the game was changed when scholly numbers were reduced.
The only team with their own network TV contract is Notre Dame. The private networks like the Longhorn network is insignificant as far as revenue and exists primarily for marketing. Network contracts are no longer monopolized by the NCAA but are negotiated by conferences , one of which we belong. All of the deeply pocketed programs have always been deeply pocketed long before the conferences were negotiating their own network contracts. Other than an appearance fee, the NCAA did not share revenue with conferences or teams when they controlled TV. We're a beneficiary of TV money as any other team (in the ACC anyways). However, those with the big bucks were able to move forward with the support of the major networks along with the NCAA. I do not think anyone can disagree with that, unless you have living in a cave for the last 20 years.
As far as bags, there was always a bag game even bag in the 60s. It existed before the TV money. We've dealt with schools with deep pockets successfully in the past. Nothing has changed to prevent us from dealing with them again. Many of the traditional deep pocketed teams are irrelevant (USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan). The only thing that changed is inflation. A good entry level position out of college in the mid 70s was around 15K a year. Now it's around 60K. Bags have grown accordingly.
Then why come to a fan site dedicated to following a team we all wish to improve and compete amongst the best in the game? Should we all similarly consign ourselves to resigned resignation? We did not help our selves when we rode the Coker train straight off a cliff and then dug ourselves a canyon at the bottom of the cliff with the hiring of Shannon, Golden, etc. I say we will not be the same Miami ever again, and I will stick by it.
What did we do to get good? Were we a bag school? Did we buy recruits? Did we cheat on the field? Did we white wash grades? The NCAA didn't have a "jones" for UM until JJ did a tap dance on Gerry Faust corpse in 1985. They were laying in wait until they could come down hard. Even the 95 crack downs were not for things that gave us a competitive or recruiting advantage.Unless we become some crazy cash cow for the NCAA, you might as well forget about it.
This does not mean we wont ever be at the top again, it just means that there are programs out there that can get away with doing what we used to do, and honestly it has everything to do with the amount of money they bring in and we are going to have to find another way.
Despite competitive disadvantage that we always operated under, we got good with superior evaluations and development. And we were situated on a hotbed of talent. Everyone knew that even back then. But we got the right ones and we got them first. What has changed is our staffs since Butch recruit off of lists. What also changed is our own administrations doesn't support the program the way good ol Henry King Stanford did. He saved the program without the pile of money others have.
We shall see.Manny is actually doing this right now, he is climbing this hill that our previous four coaches could not surmount. Our fan base wants wins, and we want them now, Manny has found a way to do that, even with limited talent at several positions. He found a way to fix the biggest problems and move forward. If he continues to do this, he will also find a way to conquer the ACC, which is, and should be, the next step. Then, and only then, he may find a way to put into title contention. So thank GOD he is not focusing on what our fan base thinks is right for this program.
Have no doubt that it is almost certainly still us against the world, because college football does not want a team like Miami to be on top again. They are afraid of us. Our brand is still very much alive, and that was prevalent in the little bit of spotlight we received early in the season. There are things that we will never be able to do again, but there is one thing that can never be taken away, THE U!!!
This us against the world is getting tiring. It may have served a purpose back in the day, but judging from the play over the last year, it hasn't gotten the team focused or fired up. It 's same with this "swagger" stuff. They talk swagger then get into a dogfight with teams less talented, who want it more. It's backwards. Back in the day, swagger came from the confidence obtained from imposing their will on the other team, again and again and again despite all the headwinds against them. It's a completely different mindset.
